In the final hour before the Heineken Cup kicks off at Twickenham, here’s a last look through some of the more popular bets on the game so far.
Leinster is proving twice as popular a selection as Ulster in the handicap betting. At present the handicap stands at 8pts and these betting patterns tell us a couple of things. Those who fancy Leinster are feeling confident that they’re going to win this game by a reasonably comfortable margin and are happy to take Leinster -8pts at 10/11. Those who fancy Ulster may be confident enough to back them at the more profitable match price.
Although more money has been taken on Leinster in the match betting there has still been a significant amount placed on Ulster. So much so that the Ulstermen are the biggest loser for us. A certain amount of that money is motivated by loyalty but clearly a good percentage of the public feel an upset is on the cards. Ulster are 3/1 in the match betting.
Rob Kearney has been the most popular selection in this market at 11/1, followed by Isa Nacewa at 9/1 and Brian O’Driscoll at 12/1. In fact the top seven most popular selections are all Leinster players. does that mean Ulster are expected to rely on the boot of Ruan Pienaar?
Man of The Match
Ruan Pienaar is the third most popular pick in this market at 7/1. If the game becomes a war of attrition his kicking will be crucial and should he land a last minute, game-winning drop-goal he’ll be a winner here. For the same reason it’s his opposite number Johnny Sexton who has seen the most money in this market, at 5/1 he’s the favourite. Rob Kearney has also been a popular choice 8/1. Combined with his popularity in the tryscorer markets, he’s expected to have a big game at Twickenham.
