Poland’s Lewandowski a good shot for top scorer

Robbie Fowler column

Robert Lewandowski could be the star of the show for Poland in the Euros.

I’ve already said his country have an outside shot. And in the 23-year-old Lewandowski they have a striker who’s at the top of his game. He’s 20/1 to be top goalscorer in the Euros at the moment, and 13/8 to score any time in the opening match against Greece.

Lewandowski has scored 13 times in 41 appearances for Poland and ended the German season with 22 goals in the league for Dortmund‚ and he plays on his own up front. The boy’s lethal.

POLISHED PERFORMER: Lewandowski was player of the year in Germany with a cup final hat-trick too

Don’t forget, Dortmund pipped Bayern for the Bundesliga title and the German Cup – and Lewandowski banged in a hat-trick for Jurgen Klopp’s team in a 5-2 win in the final over Bayern.

Of the other shots for top goalscorer at the Euros, sometimes he picks his games, but you can’t argue with Mario Gomez’s record. Last season he had 26 in the league and was top scorer in the Champions League too, with 13 goals. Playing in a good German side, he’ll be up there.

As for the Dutch the pairing of Robin Van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar — one of them will be there or thereabouts. Karim Benzema was overshadowed by Messi and Ronaldo last season. But as he showed against Estonia the other night, he’s a great striker.
