WE NEED A NEW ENFORCER: Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes know they can’t go on forever (Inpho)

Manchester United and Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of midfielder Axel Witsel after Benfica signalled their willingness to cash in on their rising star.

The Portuguese side, who made the Champions League quarter-finals, have put a £20m price tag on the Belgian international who they signed from Standard Liege for £3m last summer.

Alex Ferguson desperately needs a midfielder in the Roy Keane mould if United are to challenge Manchester City’s back-to-back Premier League title bid.

The 23-year-old served a 10-match league ban for this horror tackle that broke Marcin Wasilewski’s leg in 2009 when he played for Standard Liege

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo must also start to overhaul the Champions League winners’ midfield as his aging stars try to propel themselves back up the Premier League pecking order.
