SHOVE IT: Former Wolves and Ireland boss Mick McCarthy rules himself out of the Nottm Forest job (pic:Inpho)

Football

Mick McCarthy has ruled himself of taking over at Nottingham Forest despite being long odds-on to do so at one stage in Paddy Power’s online betting. Alex Ferguson’s son Darren has taken over from McCarthy at the head of the market.  Dundee have been invited to replace Rangers next season in the Scottish Premier Legue rather than relegated Dunfermline. Daniel Sturridge has joined up with Team GB after recovering from viral meningitis and should be fit to play in the Olympics

Golf

Practice continues at Royal Lytham ahead of Thursday’s Open Championship. Other players have joined in the chorus of disapproval about the rough after Tiger Woods stated earlier that it was ‘unplayable’  saying he new saw it that  ‘that high or thick or dense’ ahead of his 15th Major win attempt.

Paddy Power Lucky Pants do the business for London couple

By Aidan Elder | Chief Sports Writer

Being largely responsible for scoring a couple of goals at Euro 2012 was a good start for our Paddy Power Lucky Pants, but they’ve moved on dramatically to the next level.

On Friday night, Paddy Power customer, Chris Wheeler from London donned the lucky undergarments and took the plunge, asking his girlfriend, Sam, to marry him. She said yes and although it’s largely down to his ability to be selfless and treat a lady right, we’re also claiming a large chunk of credit for the Lucky Pants. He later tweeted the evidence:

PANT-TASTIC – The lucky couple after Chris proposed (pic: via Twitter)

It’s been something of a whirlwind few months for Chris and Sam. In what sounds like the plot of a Drew Barrymore rom-com, after some brief flirting and lingering glances while socialising amongst a wider group, they finally got together at midnight on New Year’s Eve last, courtesy of a party organised by Chris’s brother.

“It all happened when the New Year bells where ringing and the fireworks were going off,” Chris revealed.

“I’d had my eye on her before that night, but to be honest I left it down to her to make the move,” he said, with a slice of gender equality everyone will applaud, but some women will secretly hate.

It wasn’t long before the idea of spending the rest of his life with Sam came to him. “When you get together with that special person, you suddenly realise why everything else didn’t work out with the other people before. In the last three or so months it’s become very clear that’s it’s something I really want to do,” Chris explained, making us feel all warm and gooey inside.

THE HAPPY COUPLE – Chris generally tends to wear clothes

He began plotting his tactics for popping the question – parents, permission and pants. After doing the gentlemanly thing of asking her parents for their approval, he consulted with his parents and with a newly arrived pair of Paddy Power Lucky Pants began organising the evening special night.

“It was Sam’s birthday on Friday I thought it was fitting that we go out and make it a memorable night. We were at the top of the Gherkin for dinner,” Chris told the Paddy Power Blog.

“The sun was setting across London. We had just finished the main course and at that stage I was feeling as sick as a dog with nerves. We were sitting there, talking to each other and I asked her if everything we’d spoken about before – marriage, having kids, getting a house together, building a life together – was what she really wanted. She said ‘yes’ so I said ‘that’s good because I’ve got something to ask you’.”

“I took a step back out of my seat, got on one knee and popped the question. At that point, she cried for the next hour and a half. After a few minutes of crying, I was getting a bit sore from all the kneeling so I asked ‘is that a yes then?’ and in the middle of the tears she managed to do some nodding which I was happy to take as a ‘yes’!”

Chris says the Paddy Power Lucky Pants helped with the nerves, but he correctly decided that showing them off in the restaurant wasn’t the best course of action. “I told Sam about them afterwards and took a pic to show everyone,” he sensibly pointed out, “it was actually their debut so they’ve got a good record so far!”

Sam certainly seemed happy with the proposal, expressing her excitement succinctly and elegantly with the following tweet:

YEAH! – Take that snotty wedding dress shop ladies everywhere

The wedding nuptials are likely to take place in 2014, probably skilfully placed between the World Cup in Brazil and the new Premier League season. A trip to Las Vegas looks to be on the agenda for the stag party and no doubt some The Hangover style antics featuring the crooning of Mike Tyson.

The next outing for the Paddy Power Lucky Pants is likely to be in about a month’s time when Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign at home to Sunderland. Chris is a committed Gooner and with the club undergoing another summer of transfer tribulations, he admits “We need all the luck we can get.”

Chris and Sam are both on Twitter at @spidey_pig and @miss_chicken and you should follow them because they seem like great craic.

Paddy Power goes undercover tonight!

BUZZING: Reception is a hive of activity with all the glamour-models and footballers that come to visit

By Josh Powell

Paddy Power goes undercover tonight in Channel 4′s hit show ‘Undercover Boss’.

The show’s format is based on a senior executive working undercover in their own firm to investigate how the company really works and identify how it can be improved, as well as rewarding the heroes of the Paddy Power Blog  hard working staff.

Paddy Power board member and soon-to-be Head of Operations, William Reeves went undercover in various departments within the betting firm’s Irish and UK operations including its high street betting shops, e-gaming division, phone betting and customer services department.

HARD AT WORK: We had to ask them to get off Facebook while we took the picture

As William connects with staff across the Paddy Power business, he experiences first-hand the fast-paced and high pressure demands of the modern-day betting industry.

Filming for the episode took place in May in the build up to the Euro 2012 football championships, one of the busiest sporting events of the year for the bookmaking industry.

The show will be broadcast at 9pm tonight.

Nottingham Forest have confirmed they’re in talks with the legend himself ‘Big Mick’ McCarthy. The Kuwaiti-based Al-Hasawi family took control of Forest last week and gave Steve Coterill the boot straight away. Big Mick has guided Sunderland and Wolves to the Premier League before and knows how to get a team out of the Championship. He’s now 1/5 to take the job.

Liverpool and Chelsea look set to fight it out for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott. Theo only has a year left on his deal with the Gunners and is reportedly eager to get away from the club is his wages aren’t increased form £100,000-a-week. Arsene Wenger is supposedly keen to keep hold of the 23-year-old but with offers rumoured to be in the region of £15million is it too good to turn down?

Meanwhile it’s reported that once the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted Luka Modric will be a Real Madrid player. According to the press Spurs want an extra £5million on the £30m fee but Madrid will only add-on a poxy £3m. Once that cheeky bit of haggling gets sorted out it looks like it is a done deal.

Dimitar Berbatov took to Facebook to announce he wants out of Manchester United. The Bulgarian striker isn’t happy with warming the bench and appears to keen for a move away. According to his post Fergie has only valued him at £5million after he cost the club £30m in 2008.

In worse news for United fans Bebe is back in the squad for the pre-season tours.

Tiger Woods has deemed the conditions at Royal Lytham ‘unplayable’ ahead of the start of the British Open on Thursday. Woods, who is looking for his 15th major title went on to say that he’s never seen rough ‘that high or thick or dense’.

Paul Casey also spent the weekend practicing the course and echoed Tiger’s thoughts branding some areas of the course ‘brutal’.

The classic British summer is set to continue with plenty of wind and rain forecast before Thursday so the rough is likely to get decidedly worse.

Don’t forget Paddy Power is paying SEVEN places on the British Open

Rugby

Leeds Rhinos sprung an upset in the Challenge Cup semi-final beating old foes Wigan 39-28. It was the Rhino’s best performance of the season as they scored seven tries to defeat the defending champions. It was sweet revenge for Leeds who were humiliated by Wigan 50-8 last month. Now they can aim to lift the cup for the first time since 1999 and are 13/8 to do so.

The favourites for the trophy are the Warrington Wolves at 4/9 with Paddy Power. The Wolves booked their third appearance at Wembley in four years after destroying Huddersfield 33 points to six. Brett Hodgson scored 17 of the points to set up an intriguing clash with the Rhinos in a repeat of the 2010 final.

The Wolves were convincing winners that day and will be looking for their eighth Challenge Cup success on August 25th.

Racing

There is racing this afternoon from Ayr and Southwell as well as Dundalk which starts at 1:25pm on the all-weather. This evening there are meetings at Windsor, Wolverhampton and Killarney.

The feature race of the day is a Class 2 handicap at Ayr which runs at 4:05pm. The Ruth Carr trained Dubai Dynamo is the 2/1 favourite after a reasonable effort to finish second at Ripon this month. Oriental Scot will look to run a big race at 8/1 after a recent success at Haydock but won’t want too much rain.

Week ahead in not very important pre-season friendlies

By Aidan Elder | Chief Sports Writer

The Premier League season moves closer with every piece of completely made-up transfer tittle-tattle we read.

Sadly, there’s still the guts of a month to go before the optimism of the summer begins to evaporates and realisation that your team are pretty much as bad as they were last season descends. Much of that month will be made-up with pre-season friendlies and this week it really gets into full swing as some of the big boys begin their preparations.

One of the teams garnering most attention will be Chelsea. Roberto di Matteo has been granted access to Roman Abramovich’s substantial piggy-bank and the European champions have reinforced a squad that was already looking pretty deep. Eden Hazard gets his first chance to show off his God complex as the Pensioners head stateside for a couple of weeks. New arrivals Kevin De Bruyne, Marko Marin and Brazilian teenager, Lucas Piazón will be the other unfamiliar faces looking to announce themselves as first team material. They start off in Seattle on Wednesday, before the facing the challenge of fellow money-bags, Paris Saint Germain on Saturday who probably won’t yet have Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their ranks.

Manchester United have also been active in the transfer market, but sadly for some, not yet active enough to make Anderson completely redundant. Shinji Kagawa will have to leave his porn star girlfriend at home as begin their globe-trotting. Given the issues United have had in the centre of midfield, Kagawa is likely to feature heavily. The Red Devils take on AmaZulu on Wednesday before visiting Ajax Cape Town on Saturday. The highly rated Nick Powell is also likely to get a good bit of game time in South Africa and the return of Nemanja Vidic from a bad knee ligament injury suffered last December will be of great interest to fans and ABU’s alike.

VID AND HEALTHY? – Vidic is due to return from injury during United’s pre-season (pic: Inpho)

The defending Premier League champions, Manchester City lost to Al-Hilal on Friday night. They’ve got a couple more games you’d expect them to win, but possibly won’t this week. First up, they face former giants of East German football, Dynamo Dresden on Tuesday before upping the standard a bit by playing Turkish side, Besiktas.

Brendan Rodgers takes Liverpool to North America for the Reds’ tune-up. The new manager has been careful not to build expectations too high, but you’re not really a proper Liverpool fan if you don’t build up expectations to unrealistic heights over the summer months regardless. Fabio Borini has been the big signing of the close season for Liverpool and he’ll doubtless get a chance to boost his ego with some goals against Toronto FC on Saturday night.

In between aiming pot-shots at Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas has had to start planning for life without Luka Modric at Tottenham. A trip to Stevenage is unlikely to uncover the solution, but it will be the Portuguese whippersnapper’s first chance to crouch down on the side-line as Spurs manager.

Newcastle slipped to defeat against Chemintzer on Friday night, so starting the week with a win against Monaco tonight would be nice, if not vital. They travel to take on Fenerbahce on Saturday and the big questions of their pre-seasons will be (a) can Alan Pardew continue to work his transfer market voodoo with the likes Romain Amalfitano and Gaël Bigirimana and (b) can they ward off the reported advances for Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote?

The Everton players will feel like they drew the short-straw in the ‘exotic locations for a pre-season tour’ lottery. They head to Scotland for games against possible-SPL side, Dundee United and actual SPL side, Motherwell. It does get better after that with a trip to the Far East to follow the week after.

Outside of the Premier League, Celtic have a glamour friendly when they take on Ajax on Saturday with the most famous club currently playing at the fourth tier of their national competition, Rangers, visit Cercle Brugge on Sunday.

VIDEO: Eden Hazard is ‘So skilled and so chuffing fast’

SING WHEN YOU’RE WINNING: Chelsea TV welcome Hazard to the club with a song

Eden Hazard has been given a lovely welcome to Stamford Bridge with his very own song!

Former comedian turned Chelsea TV man Chris Cohen has recorded this fantastic number to welcome the £32million man to the club.

Chelsea fought off competition from City and United for the 21-year-old’s signature when he left Lille at the end of last season.

In 38 league games last season, Hazard knocked in 20 goals and got 15 assists and he is 40/1 to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer this season.

Even if he replicates that kind of form in the capital though I doubt the Chelsea fans will adopt this as a terrace anthem.

RE-TOON TO ST JAMES: Could Carroll be heading back to Newcastle?

Football

Liverpool are getting ready to dump £35million striker Andy Carroll and he could be heading back to his native Newcastle. Alan Pardew enquired about taking Carroll on a season-long loan but it was flatly rejected by Liverpool. The Toon Army are keen to recruit another front man as they will could lose both Demba Ba and Pappiss Cisse to the African Cup of Nations in January. It’s also rumoured that West Ham, Fulham and AC Milan are all interested in the pony-tailed striker.

Dimitar Berbatov used Facebook to declare his desire to leave Manchester United. The Bulgarian said that he loved the club but was no use to anyone if he wasn’t on the pitch. According to his post Sir Alex Ferguson has valued the striker at as little as £5million.

There is yet another ‘judgement day’ in Scottish football today following the Rangers Newco debacle. Today the Scottish Premier League will be meeting to decide whether Dundee or Dunfermline take the place of Rangers in Scotland’s top division.

Fear not Ireland fans! Yes Euro 2012 was a disaster but the future is bright. That’s because nine-year-old Zak Gilsenan from Castleknock in Dublin has been snapped up by Barcelona at a recent trial match. The Irish Messi knocked in seven goals and wowed Barca officials. Ireland for World Cup 2022?

Golf

Jeev Mikha Singh came from nowhere to stun the golfing world and pick up the Scottish Open. The Indian shot a 67 to set up a play-off with long-time leader and record-setter Francesco Molinari. Singh’s birdie on the first sudden-death hole was enough to give him the cup. Local hero Mark Warren had taken the lead shooting 14 holes under par before blowing his three shot advantage.

With the British Open starting on Thursday in Royal Lytham Tiger Woods has thrown his toys out of the pram calling the rough at the course ‘unplayable’. The 14-time major champ has kicked off royally saying he had never seen rough so ‘high or thick or dense’. He added that ‘you just can’t get out of it’, which should make this week’s Championship very interesting indeed.

Don’t forget Paddy’s paying seven places on the British Open!

Cycling

Luis-Leon Sanchez  of the Rabobank team won yesterday’s stage of the Tour de France. The 14th stage is 38km and normally noted for its brutal climb at the end of the route. However yesterday all the talk was of some pesky punctures as the course was sabotaged by tacks. There were a number of punctures but leader Bradley Wiggins and the rest of his Sky team showed plenty of sportsmanship to slow down the pace and allow those with punctures to catch up. Jolly great show all round really.

Wiggins still holds the yellow jersey, leading the rest of the pack by two minutes and five seconds ahead of today’s stage.

Racing

Brendan Powell Junior has recovered after a horrific fall at Southall. Powell was on board The Lemonpie in a handicap chase when he fell at the third last. The horse rolled over Powell who was instantly knocked-out in a sickening collision. Luckily he regained consciousness on the way to hospital in Nottingham and his dad, Brendan Powell Snr, confirmed everything was well and the trip to hospital was a precaution.

On the track today there’s racing from Ayr and an evening meeting at Windsor. On the all-weather there’s action from Southwell and Wolverhampton and in Ireland there are meetings at Dundalk and Killarney.

Paddy Power on Undercover Boss live blog

Tonight on Channel 4 Paddy Power is featured on Undercover Boss. You’ll get to see a little of what happens inside Power Tower and we’ll all be hoping we didn’t tell our undercover boss to piss off as we barged past him in to the lift. Let’s see how it all went down.

===============================

22.10: Well that wasn’t too bad at all. William came across as a good egg and I get an extra day off. Everyone’s a winner! That’s more than enough pointless waffle for one night but I’m right chuffed.

22.00: Wait, do I get an extra day holiday this year? Sweet. He’s getting that hug after all.

21.58: Aww…it’s getting all emotional at the end. I’m going to give William a hug when I see him in work. Okay maybe not a hug but definitely a friendly nod.

21.50: There’s Paddy looking smooth. One of the people at that table buys lots of shots on nights out.

21.47: Ten minutes left and I haven’t appeared once. More importantly I’ve managed to not say anything offensive. It has been tough though. Really, really tough. I have a penchant for being offensive in a mildly amusing manner. I’m also aware I haven’t said anything of any interest either but I’ll still have a job tomorrow.

21.41: I asked my Mancunian colleague if all of Manchester is like this. He refused to answer knowing I’d hang him out to dry in a desperate effort to make this blog entertaining. If only for me.

21.34: Good work by Channel 4, they’ve managed to make my job seem way more dramatic than it did as I trundled in late this morning only half sure I was fully dressed. That’s why I’m doing this blog now.

21.26: I used to work on the phones back in my college days. I was especially awesome at it.

21.21: I can’t say I know Trish but she seems pretty darn kick-ass. Her and dancing man are the heroes of the show so far.

21.18: The last time there was a documentary type show recorded in Paddy Power I was filmed going mental at the tv after Liverpool scored. Not a good look. Back to the show in hand. As my colleague just pointed out you bet online for convenience, you go to the shops for the characters.

21.13: Hmmm…I’m wondering how ‘Paddy Power’ I can be in blogging about Paddy Power. So many jokes but so few job options if I get fired.

21.10: Ah now, who doesn’t love a dance?

21.05: Patrick? Mr Kennedy if you don’t mind. He’s my boss so obviously he’s a wonderful man. Yes this is me brown nosing.

21:02: Here we go….Paddy Power goes under the Channel 4 microscope. I hope I’m not in it. That won’t be good for anyone involved.
