Beijing silver-medallist Kenny Egan gives his thoughts on Irish gold medal hope Katie Taylor’s semi-final fight againt Mavzuna Chorieva from Tajikistan.
Her quarter-final win over British fight Natasha Jonas:
To go out and fight the way she did against Jonas in the quarter-final, it’s actually a shame that it wasn’t the final.
She boxed brilliantly against a very strong opponent and she moved up through the gears when she needed to.
Even after the fight she said the second round was a bit quiet. She was told to get the head down and she drove it on in the third round. Her engine is amazing as is her variety of punches. She’s just brilliant.
Her semi-final clash with Mavzuna Chorieva:
She beat Chorieva 16-6 in the quarter-finals of the World Championships so she shouldn’t have any problems today at all.
Being the Olympic games anything can happen but if she boxes they way she did against Jonas then this girl shouldn’t trouble her at all to be honest.
I don’t know if she’ll stop this girl but she’s going to cause her a lot of problems. With that crowd behind Katie she can up her game again. If she boxes to her ability she’ll be in the final.
