Updated football news: Dempsey, Song and Van Persie

Arsenal

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sell midfielder Alex Song to Barcelona. ”Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Alex Song to Barcelona,” a club statement read. “Song will now travel to the Catalan club to agree personal terms and undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move.”

Song was not included in the squad as Arsenal drew 0-0 at home to Sunderland in their opening Premier League game today.

Manchester United

Robin van Persie wants to achieve “greatness” with Manchester United after his £24m move from Arsenal.

The Dutch striker (29) has signed a four-year deal and could make his debut at Everton on Monday. RVP said: “It’s an honour to sign for Manchester United.

“I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “The boy wanted to come. He turned down various clubs. If he hadn’t told Arsenal he wanted to go to Manchester United, the transfer wouldn’t have happened.”

Manchester City

Manager Roberto Mancini insists neighbours Manchester United are favourites to win the Premier League. Let the mind games begin.

“Van Persie was the best striker last year,” Mancini said. “With Rooney they will have one of the best couple of strikers in the Premier League. I was serious last week when I said Manchester United were the favourites.”

Liverpool

Clint Dempsey has moved a step closer to leaving Fulham for Anfield. Dempsey did not play in Fulham’s Premier League 5-0 win against Norwich after telling boss Martin Jol he does not want to play for the London club any more. [Check out one of Dempsey's best goals, against Juventus, above]

“He has told us he wants to leave,” said Jol. Dempsey (29) scored 23 goals in 46 appearances last season and has one year left on his contract at Craven Cottage.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that club chief executive Ian Ayre had been in touch with Dempsey.

Meanwhile, winger Oussama Assaidi (24)  has joined Liverpool from Dutch side Heerenveen. ”When I watch Liverpool it’s always a good atmosphere. The fans are fantastic and I’m happy to be here,” he said.
