Jonathan Soriano’s penalty miss for Red Bull Salzburg may have gone viral but Shane Long’s shocker to give West Brom a 2-0 cushion was just as bad.
Luckily for the Irish international, referee Phil Dowd was in generous mood and a second spot kick minutes later was convincingly converted by Peter Odemwingie.
At 1-0 up the Birmingham Road end of the Hawthorns was getting ready for a two-goal cushion and wild celebrations in their season opener. But Long had other ideas.
Soriano played for Barcelona’s B team alongside Messi, Xavi and Iniesta but transferred to the Austrian side earlier this year.
As the video from behind both goals show Soriano and Long were clearly missing from penalty practice before coming up with these efforts.
Expect Odemwingie to be given the role should the Baggies get a spot-kick away to Spurs next Saturday.
