Cork Rose pruned in late Rose of Tralee gamble

CAPITAL INVESTMENT – Backing Dubs isn’t a bad idea in the Rose of Tralee (pic: Paddy Power Blog)

A late gamble has developed on Cork entrant Brid Ryan to be crowned the 2012 Rose of Tralee when the annual lovely girls’ contest starts tonight.

Ryan won’t appear on stage until near the end of tomorrow night’s finale but Paddy Power has already taken evasive action and cut Ryan to 5/2 favourite from 7/1 in their online betting.

Next best is long-time leading fancy Arlene O’Neill from Dublin at 3/1 with Mayo Rose and Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s niece Dervla Kenny next best at 8/1.

One slight disadvantage the favourite faces as she tries to add to Cork’s three wins in 52 years is that she’s a blonde.

And Paddy Power’s number crunchers have shown that blondes trail brunettes by a distance in winning the Rose of Tralee.

Tonight, 32 potential winners will try to wrestle the tiara from last year’s winner Tara Talbot, Queensland, Australia when the competition starts tonight.
