Don’t Roo-le me out: Wayne might be back this month

NO PAIN FOR WAYNE: Rooney says the gruesome gash ‘didn’t hurt at all’

Despite suffering a sickening gash on his right thigh a fortnight ago against Fulham, Wayne Rooney is hoping to be back in action for Manchester United by the end of the month.

Rooney suffered the horrific injury in an accidental clash with Hugo Rodallega’s boot during United’s 3-2 win at Old Trafford and initial fears where that he could be sidelined for some time, with the risk of infection a major concern. The star-striker believes he is on track with his recovery and that means that if the doctors are confident Wazza could return for the Capital One Cup clash with Newcastle on September 26th or the home game against Tottenham three days later.

‘It feels good at the minute’, the 26-year-old told the Manchester Evening News. ‘The timescale put on it was four weeks. If that is the time they feel I need for the wound to heal properly then that is what I will do.

‘What I don’t want to happen is to come back too early when it is not quite healed and it opens up again first game. That would just set me back again another four weeks.’

When Rooney does return United fans will be hoping he can spark a relationship with big-summer signing Robin Van Persie who netted a hat-trick for Alex Ferguson’s side against Southampton last week. RVP is the 11/4 favourite to finish the season as the top goalscorer with Rooney available at 20/1 in the betting. Manchester United are 2/1 to regain their crown with rivals City the 6/4 favourites to make it back-to-back titles.
