NFL betting preview: Lions to roar past San Francisco 49ers

MEGATRON: Calvin Johnson’s running game can upset San Fran

By Michael Nagle

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers, Monday, CH4, 12.45am

This is probably the stand-out game of week two and may are tipping the 49ers to win the Vince Lombardi trophy after one win on the road.

This is all about San Fran’s defence shutting down the Detroit passing game with Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson.

I’m sure they’ll be looking at how the Rams picked Stafford four times last weekend but even the meanest defence in the league will have trouble keeping Calvin Johnson out of the game for long. Alex Smith looked quite poised at Lambeau Field last week with more options in attack.

Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter should punch big holes in the Detroit defensive line with their hard running game and it’s hard to see past the Niners to win this game.

But has there been an over-reaction to San Fran’s win last week? Should they be favoured by 7 points at home to the Lions? The Niners looked like they played with a chip on their shoulders but will they be as intense at home?

Detroit have a point to prove after struggling to a four point win over the Rams and it’s quite possible that they were looking past the Rams to this game.

I think San Francisco should win but Detroit have a decent chance of matching them at (+7.0) 5/6.
