Liverpool got their Europa League campaign off to a winning start despite a few scares against Young Boys in Switzerland. The reds, whose average age was actually four years younger than that of the four boys went ahead through a bananas own goal but slipped behind and found themselves 3-2 behind with 20 minutes left on the clock. Brendan Rodgers’ side came back and equalised before two goals from Jonjo Shelvey secured a 5-3 win for the new-look Liverpool team.

It was far less exciting for Newcastle and Tottenham fans who saw their teams draw 0-0 with Maritimo and Lazio respectively. Spurs had a few goals disallowed and Newcastle hit the woodwork a couple of times but neither English club could get the win.
Looking ahead to the tastiest tie of the weekend and Manchester United have said that every player will shake hands with Luis Suarez. The race row betweeen the Liverpool star and Patrice Evra rumbles on but both clubs will be trying to do everything to ensure it is just the football that makes the headlines on a day full of emotion.
