Ruby Walsh exclusive: Nearest the Pin could go close at Gowran

Ruby Walsh

Top jock Ruby Walsh limbers up for the jumps season with four rides from Gowran Park in Ireland.

Willie Mullins has Una Veintena (2.15) in the first but I can’t ride her as as she’s only carrying 10-1. She’s a handy little filly but may be up against it with the couple of winners in this.

I schooled Digeanta (2.45) this one during the week and he has already won a Cork bumper.  The good ground over 2m4f should suit him but there’s a couple of decent types here particularly Yes Way Hosey who was fifth in the Cheltenham bumper last March behind Willie’s Champagne Fever. We’ll see how he gets on.

Deutschland (3.15) has been working well at home and running well on the Flat of late. Likes the ground but hasn’t performed well over timber for a while. If he rediscovers his old sparkle he could run into a place.

I’ve no ride in the big one at 3.50 where Sizing Europe (3.50) makes his seasonal debut but I’d be hopeful of a good run from Nearest the Pin (4.20) for Tony Martin and this one is experienced and I’d be hopeful. He’s rated 132 even though he’s still a maiden over fences. Will appreciate the ground and the trip.

Sicilian Secret (4.55) has a chance. He’s working well and has schooled well but it’s a competitive race. It’s always a worry on your first run in a handicap. I just hope he gets close enough to run a good race from the turn-in.
