Liverpool travel to Moscow tonight to tackle Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League (5pm). Most of the regular team will miss the delights of Moscow in November as manager Brendan Rodgers has left Luiz Suarez, Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling at home ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has taken a different tack though and will field a strong side away against Club Brugges (6pm). A win for the Magpies should ensure a place in the last 32 with two games remaining in the group. Yohan Cabaye, James Perch and Demba Ba are sidelined as the Geordies look to cement a place in Group D’s top two.

Spurs are still looking for their first win and face Slovenian champions Maribor at White Hart Lane (8.05). Andre Villas-Boas side were booed off against Wigan last weekend after losing 1-0 at home so the master of the crouch will be hoping for no more slip-ups tonight.

Last night belonged to Celtic with their 3-1 win over four-time European champions Barcelona but it was also a good night for the Premier League clubs.

Chelsea grabbed a winner in the fourth minute of injury time against Shakhtar Donetsk to win 3-2 while Manchester United again left it late coming from a goal down to win 3-1 away to Braga and qualify for the knock-out stages with two games to spare. Malaga and Porto are also through to the last 16.

Thomas Bjorn is the early clubhouse leader at the Singapore Open overnight on five-under par – one shot clear of Simon Khan, Chinnarat Phadungsil and Pablo Martin. Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy is level par after eight holes while three-time winner Adam Scott finished on the same score.

Racing

David Pipes’ Grands Crus heads the betting for the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday week after the weights for the 2m 4f chase were published yesterday.  He will shoulder joint top-weight with last year’s jumping sensation Hunt Ball who improved a massive 88lbs in the ratings over the season winning seven-races in the process.

Thursday’s racing comes from Musselburgh, Lingfield, Towcester, Wolverhampton Thurles and Meydan.
