The face of darts on Sky Sports Dave Clark has given the Paddy Power Blog his hottest tips ahead of tonight’s Grand Slam action. The arrows tipster has gone through the card tonight and picked out a red-hot double.
Dave Clark’s Treble
Steve Beaton and Mervyn King to win: 4/1
Jan Dekker v Aaron Monk
There’s a lot of pressure on Aaron Monk. He made the group stages but never qualified in 2010 and 2011 and this is a must win tonight. The Youth Tour champion beat James Wade 5-1 but it was an out of sorts Wadey. He then lost 5-3 to Mervyn King who averaged about 100.
These two men met at the same stage last year and Jan Dekker won so that might play on Monk’s mind. Dekker lost to King and Wade but there is no pressure on him because he is better than that. He’s the outsider but ‘Double Dekker’ beat Monk this time last year and can beat him again tonight at 13/8.
Mark Webster v Co Stompe
Co Stompe won the World Cup a couple of years ago but he hasn’t looked himself since then. He’s been out of the game after taking a break for four months and he is lacking that sharpness at the moment. Mark Webster beat Scot Waites 5-4 and then didn’t disgrace himself when losing 5-2 to Phil Taylor. He’s 1/2 and is the nearest to a sure thing you will see tonight.
Kevin Painter v James Hubbard
Kevin Painter has to win tonight and he’s in good form after winning the Player’s Championship. James Hubbard looks very nervous when he steps up to the oche. He has had five attempts to win a Grand Slam match in the last two years and hasn’t won any of them. That might play on his mind. He’s good on the 180s but his finishing seems to let him down. Remember he was born in 1992 so is definitely one to watch in years to come as he grows in confidence. Painter is a wily old campaigner and a seasoned professional though and should pick up the win tonight at 2/5.
Robert Thornton v Steve Beaton
The Bronze Adonis hasn’t played badly in this tournament. He lost to Michael Van Gerwen 5-2 but Mighty Mike was unstoppable in that match averaging 103 very impressively. Beaton then lost to Ted Hankey which was a real turn up for the books. Steve will want to go out on a high. At 6/4 tonight he will cause an upset and beat Robert Thornton.
James Wade v Mervyn King
James Wade is the favourite but he’s difficult to back at the moment because you don’t know who will turn up. Mervyn King is a Grand Prix finalist, he beat Jan Dekker 5-1, he beat Aaron Monk 5-3 and averaged nearly 100. The cut of his jib is really impressive. It will be a tight one but King should edge it at evens.
Phil Taylor v Scott Waites
Phil Taylor is simply too good for Scott Waites. Scotty 2 Hotty is a former Grand Slam champion but Taylor will have far too much for him. This should be comfortable for the Power and odds of 1/6 reflect that.
Simon Whitlock v Dean Winstanley
Simon Whitlock likes playing late so this will suit him very well. In the last month the Wizard has won the European Championship, the European Tour event and two player’s championships. He’s the form man and could go all the way in this tournament. He should pick up a convincing win in tonight’s match at odds of 4/9.
Michael Van Gerwen v Ted Hankey
Ted Hankey was so close to a nine-darter and in great form in the last match. The first three legs the Count threw were unstoppable. But Van Gerwen is in great form and is full of confidence. That Grand Prix win has lifted his game and he’ll give it to Hankey early doors tonight. Ted Hankey won’t be able to get into this man’s head at all. Van Gerwen beat Beaton with a 103 average and he beat Thornton 5-3. He is a great price to win this whole event and will beat Hankey tonight at 4/1.
