Lionel Messi edges closer to even greaterness

by Rob Dore | November 20, 2012

That’s not a spelling error in the header, before the trolls start smugly thrashing away on their keyboards. Lionel Messi scored his 79th and 80th goals of the calendar year on Tuesday, bringing him that much closer to the great Gerd Muller.

The German’s record of 85 goals in one calendar year has stood since 1972 but with seven games to get the six goals needed to break that record, Lionel Messi is on the verge of even greaterness. A new word has been invented to describe how good the little Argentinian is.

This  graphic gives a comparison of goals scored by Lionel Messi in 2012 and Gerd Muller in 1972.

SOCCER: Messi targets Muller's record

To be fair to Muller, the German scored his 85 goals in 60 games while Messi has already paid 62. So there’ll be an asterix beside his name if he does break the record.

Messi’s brace against Spartak Moscow on Tuesday put Barcelona through as group winners, the second of which is in the animated GIF below. Quite the tasty ball through by Pedro too as this animated GIF shows.

Meanwhile, how good was Gerd Muller? Have a look…
