GEORDIE POOR: Backing Newcastle isn’t the best idea in round one

Christmas is here and the most important thing about the festive season is not the joy on kids faces when they wake up to see Santa has visited, it’s not about spending time with the family, it’s not even about having a proper good feed and overindulging on the mince pies. Christmas is all about a truckload of Premier League fixtures and a whopping offer on Paddy’s Last Man Standing competition.

The Last Man Standing competition on Boxing Day (or St Stephens Day if you prefer) is completely free to enter and could see you pocketing a cool £5,000.

The rules are simple. Each week you have to pick the winner of one Premier League match. Draw or lose and you’re out, but if they win congratulations  you have made it through to the next round. A key point is that you may not pick the same team to win more than once during the tournament so you can’t keep choosing the Manchester clubs as they go around and thump all and sundry.

As the name suggests if you are indeed the last man, or woman, standing then the money is all yours!

Last year saw Paddy fork out a staggering €75,000 to the winners of Last man Standing.

By using a bit of nous and taking a look ahead at the fixtures a few weeks in advance you could find yourself with a cheeky £5k in your back pocket. Basically you could just go for whoever Reading are playing this week and still go quite far in the competition, but a little bit of thinking outside the box is key to coming out on top.

Safe choices and ‘bankers’ are fine but if everything goes to form then a lot of people will progress to the next round so it might be worth taking a few risks here and there to win the big prize.

Winners tend to come after the 12 week stage and more often than not as far as the 15 week mark so at some stage you will have to pick teams from lower down the division if you are to win the cash. If you see the opportunity to get rid of a weaker team early on it’s probably wise to take it.

Take advantage of the supposedly weaker teams that have strong home form such as Stoke, Everton and Norwich and you could be one step closer to winning a whopping load of cash and having bragging rights over everybody else.
