World Cup Punting Hall of Fame: Plucking out a 500/1 winner from the madness that was Germany 7-1 Brazil

by Josh Powell | July 8, 2014

If you think it was a tough night for Fred, you haven’t seen the state of Paddy’s book.

Germany put on one of the most outstanding displays of football to annihilate a woeful Brazil side 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final. It is Brazil’s heaviest defeat in their history and the heaviest World Cup semi-final defeat of all time. thomas Muller opened the scoring after 11 minutes, before Miroslav Klose, Toni Kroos twice and Sami Khedira then scored in the space of six minutes to make it 5-0 before half an hour had even gone. After the break Germany relaxed and substitute Andre Schurrle bagged a brace, before Oscar notched a consolation for the hosts in stoppage time.

A whopping 75 per cent of the 90 minute book was on Germany at 9/5, and 82 per cent of the cash in the ‘To Qualify’ market was on Joachim Lowe’s side at 10/11. It really was a pasting for Paddy.

But while those bets looked decent at the start, there were some stupid looking punts that look like a stroke of genius now. And those are the ones getting particular attention in our Punting Hall of Fame.

Half-time correct score: Germany 5-0 Brazil
One UK punter from the West Midlands had £1 on at 500/1.

Correct score: Germany 7-1 Brazil
Four punters were on at 500/1. One punter from Essex had a fiver on it and cashed in on a cool £2,505.

Kroos to score two or more goals
82 punters jumped on at 80/1. One punter from Shropshire had £20 on it and lapped up £1620 of Paddy’s coppers.

OK, so that last one isn’t the craziest bet of all time but it was well worth including. If someone in the pub had told you they had backed one of those other bets before kick-off you’d suspect that the real ale had sent them crazier than a bag of racoons. They don’t looks so silly now.

Take a bow, lads. We salute you.
