Over The Line

They Think It’s All Over…

…and so it nearly is not just for the magnificent Euro 2008 but also for BBC’s voice of football John Motson.

Its perhaps apt to recall Kenneth Wolstenholme’s immortal line of commentary with this being the last time we can take a punt on the first Commentary Cliche Motty uses in a major final.

Whilst having slipped from his lofty standards in the last couple of years Motty remains a legend, having commentated on just about all the big games in my lifetime. He’s been easy to criticise in the last couple of years but I dare say he’ll be missed and looked upon more fondly when he’s gone. Especially with the thought the majority of live football on terrestrial TV next year will be shown on ITV… a scary thought already.

So what famous lines is Motty going to leave us with?

The favourite at 7/1 is 1964, the last time Spain didn’t choke, whilst 1996 - Germany’s last Euro triumph - is 11/1.

But I’d love to see “the voice” go out with a true Mottyism and “There’s danger here” and “These are nervous moments” are 12/1 and 14/1 respectively. But maybe not as much as I’d enjoy Motty uttering “Frings ain’t what they used to be” at 50/1.

There is a bit of previous here with Motty catching us out before. Will he go out with a betting bang on his commentary tonight?

  7. fernando torres Says:

yeah sully agree senna was good, but hard to split between senna, xavi & fabregas, only that fabregas didnt start all games………. casillas woz excellent some great match saving keeping at times….
    viva espania
p.s i hope ronaldo stays with united, nice to be able to see the likes of arsenal & manchester city make a fool of him again tis year !!!!

  8. tonton zola mokouko Says:

arsenal? is that the same team he scored two league goals against last year?

  9. jrio Says:

What did win the BBC Commentary Cliche bet? It’s not shown on the complete results on PP for the game.

  10. fernando torres Says:

no tonton…. it’s the club in london, who play in emrites stadium, and who’s players arent mercenaries….like another club who play in red & are supported by non manchunians……

  11. fernando torres Says:

    deco for the blues

  12. tonton zola mokouko Says:

torres - you said you hope arsenal make an idiot of him again. when did they make an idiot of him last season? he played 2 games against them and scored twice. helping us to get 4 points against them which proved pretty valuable in us winning the league.

and you’re saying adebayor isn’t a mercenary? what about gallas?

Because no one outside of London supports Chelsea Arsenal or Spurs or outside of Liverpool supports them or Everton do they.Get a grip

  14. Spud Says:

Fernando as a L’Pool supporter I would have to disagree with ye…Harry Kewell turns down a decrease in pay to stick with a club ‘that he has supported all his life’ and who paid him for sitting on his fat arse for the past few years. In the words of Eamonn Dunphy ‘a clown - no a fat clown!’. Michael Owen and Steve McManamin are 2 players that have turned their backs on the club that made them for Spanish clubs in the past so don’t try and tell me Liverpool players are all there for the love of the club.

  15. david villa@barca.com Says:

ole, lol, very easy for fernando to get the mancs goin, all clubs have there grabbers, but united have an over flow of them……….. also, for such a big team, with little to no local support, (well supported) we all like a winning team, but very few manc support united…. i think that was fernies message, any way……………… barca for champions league, with me in side, bye bye deco…… 10mill, lol, anyone want ronaldino…. going cheap…….
    were all ABU’s deep down…………….

  16. Sully Says:

Robbie Keane in line to join Liverpool.Yet another wonderful idea by Rafa cant get Villa oh wait a minute what about Robbie Keane.Yes hel be handy for Champions League qualifiers against the San Marino champions.Do Liverpool fans seriously believe that Robbie Keane is good enough to play for such an illustrious club

  17. tonton zola mokouko Says:

as a manc, i can tell you that there are comfortably more reds than blues in manchester - that’s a simple FACT.

we just have a lot of fans from other parts of the world too. it’s part and parcel of being a big club with a romantic and illustrious history that play fantastic football. it’s tough, but we’ll take it. being double champions probably isn’t going to help either. ah well….

  18. Spud Says:

I partially agree with you except the Utd fans are actually from Salford and not Manchester tonton, people from Manchester are blues!

  19. tonton zola mokouko Says:

again not true. people from the stockport area tend to support citeh, but in general more people in manchester support united. it’s a simple fact. in any case, salford is part of greater manchester, and a short walk from the city centre.
