Dublin v Tyrone
Exclusive Alan Brogan and Brian Dooher Interview

2005 will go down long in the memories of Tyrone fans. Apart from lifting the Sam Maguire, beating Dublin in their own back yard in the quarter-final replay, topped off with a sublime goal by Owen Mulligan who danced around the Dubs defence like John Travolta, was a sweet victory for the Red Hands. Let us not forget the infamous Battle of Omagh earlier in 2005 that Tyrone lost which made their win over the Dublin all the sweeter. An expected repeat of these events did not come to fruition in the first flood lit match at Croke Park in ‘07, but it did continue the counties’ heated rivalry.

The Sky Blues, despite getting off to a slow start this year, proved they’re All-Ireland contenders with their second-half demolition of Wexford. Although Tyrone are fading in stature and haven’t been as clinical as in recent years, the significance and recent history of this encounter means they can’t be written off.

Expect intensity, passion, heart and.. eh… rain. Like the weather this is tough to predict but check out what the respective captains think. Dublin’s Alan Brogan and Tyrone’s Brian Dooher tell it how it is below in interviews exclusive to Paddy Power.

  1. Sam's Coming Home Says:

Dublin with send those Nordie windbags packing on Saturday. No doubt about it.

  2. Niall B Says:

Monday morning is going to be some laugh on this blog, what’s the chances the Dub fans will all go missing when it goes tits up?

  3. Eamo F Says:

The extra week will have done the Tyrone lads the world of good, the Dubs thought they were playing a week earlier which might not have helped. If the Dubs are not 100% focused from the start, Tyrone can deffo give them a game

  4. Magic M Says:

Eamo it does seem your grasping at straws. Understandable since its your last chance with the Ulster teams. But come on, Tyrone couldn’t even get past Down, who in turn were well beat by Wexford. Only for Wexford then to beat the Ulster Champions, and this after Wexford were embarrassed by Dublin. Only because people are blinded by bias, they would see that Dublin are a good team and Ulster is very weak this year!

PS just in case people start labelling me im not a Dub. Im just taking a realistic view of the season as a whole!

  5. Eamo F Says:

    Magic,
I am grasping at straws here, but we can live in hope. Ulster has been weak this year. I don’t see how everybody thinks Dublin have improved. Wexford had the worst second half of football I have ever seen, so the Dubs ran out comfortable winners. The Dubs struggled to get past Westmeath for most of the game, and Louth were still in touch at half time. Tyrone will know how to mix it with the Dubs, I’m deffo on Tyrone on the handicap in this one. We all know in the past, the Dubs seem to always make it hard for themselves, nothing is ever easy. Let’s hope it’s a cracking game, as this years Championship hasn’t had many games to savour

  6. Sully Says:

A yes Westmeath did put it up to them with their blanket defence but lack of firepower with the exception of Dessie Dolan meant they werent able to punish the Dubs .Tyrone are better equipped in this department but regardless of what happens on Saturday Kerry will still be Kings in September. If there is only a point or two in it with ten minutes left I wouldnt like to be in an Arnotts jersey. As for Ulster been weak this year it aint as weak as Leinster has been since the mid 90s

  7. Sam's Coming Home Says:

Enough of this babble gentlemen. Lets face it, Saturday is a mere formality for the mighty Dubs. The true test will be against the Kingdom in September.

  8. Eamo F Says:

Sean Cavanagh v Ross McConnell, what a mis-match! Apollo Creed v Ivan Drago springs to mind!

  9. Sully Says:

Brogan V McMenemmen oh to see the nancy boy landed on his big backside

  10. riemann Says:

Sully, which one is the nancy boy?!

Ah no, I know u mean brogan but mcmenamin is an awful attention seeker as well.

Not exactly a nancy boy tho his beard makes him look like a stone age man.

  11. Occupied Six Counties Says:

I knew Ricey personally, civil lad but when he crosses the white line he is a different ball game all together. Alan Brogan will not know what hit him!

  12. riemann Says:

    HaHaHaHa

I have never seen such a disgraceful performane from any team in Croke Park.

    Bring back Stan!

The Hill! HaHa. Funniest day of the year.

I suppose all the dub fans will be on here making excuses. There will be some gems for sure. The weather will probably get an honary mention.

  13. Occupied Six Counties Says:

Now we won’t have to listen to anymore shite from the Dubs until next June, what a woeful performance. Mis-matches all over the field and the match up between the managers was a no contest. See ya next year Jackeens!

  14. bc Says:

i lost money on the dubs today but being from ulster it wasnt all bad as the dirty dubs are out for another year, some pricks on this blog should be eating humble pie as all year they have talked up this dub team!!pillar caffrey is a joke, bonner wouldnt get a game for antrim, whealen a thug year after year who he have got the line in the first half today, jayo is done, moran and casey are pernially crap and always will be, ryan will not do any better than this year, connolly pure dung, keaney well over rated not in the top 20 forwards in ireland, quinn yellow, both brogans decent but like the rest of the team overhyped!! for a county with such a population dublin are a pure joke!! fair play to tyrone, the only thing stopping them gettin to an all ireland final is complacency

  15. Patrick Says:

I’m a Dub in a flood with no hood, got
12bore beatin, no rain will stop me bleathin, got
12bore beatin, just gotta gotta keep bleathin, wham
Redhand bam no thank ya Sam- PBB-(

  16. Sully Says:

Well Well Well. The shit has hit the fan Dubs gone Caffery gone No All Ireland medal for Whelan No player of the year for Shane Ryan.It was boys against men out there yesterday some of Tyrones football was a joy to watch.Mickey Harte surely one of the greatest managers of his generation tactically brilliant and humble in victory as in defeat. The weather the fact that Brogan got injured that the ref was from Kerry that the match was delayed a week to ensure a full house of Dubs can all be fired as excuses but the facts remain this is Ireland in the summer what do you expect .McConnell Cullen Griffin Whelan Keaney Quinn Vaughan Connelly all not good enough.as for Caffery resigning well that was an attempt to take away from Tyrones victory and shine the spotlight on his thick head one last time even though his term was up at the final whistle anyway. As for RTE shame on your Dublin bias to put Bolt 100 metres gold as top story on the sports bulletin last evening and trying to sandwich Dublins humiliation in between storys from Beijing. There must have been some serious last minute editing in the RTE sports department .To finish well done Tyrone for brightening up the dull summer for the other 30 counties.Yesterday a day to savour

  17. william wright Says:

Ho ho ho as santa says , sitting back in my large black leather chair watching TIR EOGHAIN tear up the form book and paddy p wondering if pricing up kerry and dublin all ireland football final was a smart move thanks paddy p, mickey heart didnt need to motivate the red hands paddy and the southern media and RTE did it for him, poor jayo lucky in 1996 when tir eoghain were robbed of a replay 16 men dubs yes paddy russell was the extra man that day the day the year the dubs needed an all- ireland . bring on wex ( mattie) ford at last a team who can match an ulster team , p.s. why you might be thinking I was sitting in my large black leather sofa and not at croker , the reason you see my last visit in 2005 tyrone the mighty red hands beat cafferys metropolitans and my shirt was covered in more mucus that a geriatric day care centre, my car window smashed more ulster cars clamped, nice thats dublin hospitality for you. tyrone abu

  18. william wright Says:

sams coming home sams coming home sams coming home , bagatelle are releasing there greatest hits album again , with such hits as I remember that TYRONE team that beat DUBLIN, whats another YEAR, and the classic,is it raining in hill sixteen tonight, tyrone abu

  19. Martin Says:

Nordies beat the Dubs in their own back yard again…….

Saffrons win the Tommy Murphy and Tyrone win Sam, great double for the nordies!!

  20. bc Says:

idiot boy is very quiet all of a sudden, i noticed that on rte too sully a joke, would love to see ulster win sam to annoy spillane, o’rourke and co but think the kingdom are too strong

  21. Jim Jim Says:

Mentally Dublin weren’t prepared for that game. I think the fact the semi final tie was announced didn’t help their cause. The players had one eye on the final already as they fancied another walk over past Wexford.

Saying all that, I believe Dublin were unlucky for the first 20 mins. Once they didn’t have it their way, they crumbled.

  22. Occupied Six Counties Says:

You are a having a laugh Jim Jim, that are just feeble excuses! How you could even say the Dubs were a bit unlucky is just silly. I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the weather as another excuse. The Jackeens had manners put on them!

  23. Sully Says:

And Waterford getting to the final at the SIXTH attempt was top story of the sports news yesterday evening.Such hypocrasy.Dublin will be waiting a long time before they can even think of lifting Sam.Its all well and good hammering Louth and the likes and goading and taunting the weaker oppositon but when it comes to stepping up the plate and taking on men the Dubs just shrink into their sky blue jerseys.Until next June when a 29 point thumping of Carlow starts all this Dub shite talk for another 12 weeks farewell and good riddance ye wont be missed

  24. Sully Says:

To be honest Id love to see Kilkenny and Kerry complete their 3 in a rows simply because they are the two finest teams Iv Seen in my 24 years on this earth. Its just the purist in me thats the only reason. And to see Nickey Brennan have to hand Sam to Paul Galvin would surely be the most ironic scene considering his meddling in the Paul Galvin affair this summer

  25. red hand oneill Says:

I feel sorry for the DUBS great fans on the hill, not a bad team just poorly lead, i think if they had magic mick o’dwyer there wait for sam would have been over, micko once said he would have loved to manage the under 21 team of canavan and co and we would have and should have had SAM much sooner , total faith tyrone abu

  26. Eamo F Says:

All credit to Tyrone lads, they were awesome!

  27. TakeYourPoints.com Says:

The only chance Dublin have at winning the Sam this year is on this game:

    http://www.takeyourpoints.com

  28. John Morgan O' Brien Says:

Dublin are shit heads and the hill 16 are dog shits who criticise other teams such as Kerry. Pillar was a pure disaster and for the Dub’s laughing at paul galvin i must say our paul is a far better person than that ciaran whelan who is a pure tug. just look at the last day. Good riddence to the Dubs Come on The KINGDOM. 3 IN A ROW BECKONS….

  29. red hand oneill Says:

takeyourpoint, I think connelly, sherlock, keaney, quinn and co would even find this beyond them bit of fun tho. tyrone abu

  30. omagh gael Says:

after the demolition job on saturday, i stayed on in Dublin to savour Irelands greatest slabbers make excuse after excuse about the jackeens demise. here are some gems:
    1-referee
    2-weather
3-media hype(come on, Liam ’slabber’ Hayes was spot on!)
4-Dublin thought the game was the week before, (love that one)
5-provincial champions are handicapped (’what does the back door look like’ jibes. fantastic)
6-’Sure soccers the big sport down here’. Deadly

Rte will have to wait another 13 years for their beloved ‘boys in blue’ to beat a quality team in the Championship.

    stick to the soccer.
    tir eoghain abu

  31. riemann Says:

    omagh gael -

    dont get allcarried away now.

Sure it was hilarious on saturday, but I will be shouting for wexford the next day along with all the other 31 counties, and will definitely be backin them +3 @evens.

Tyrone are my 2nd most hated team in the championship after Dublin.

Ye may be getting the plaudits now but will ye be able to raise yeir game again against wexford?

  32. omagh gael Says:

I don’t think I’m getting carried away. Far from it. I respect Wexford and they’re still here because they deserve to be here.

Of course many will be backing Wexford, the underdog is always the nuetrals favourite. If they win, I wish them well in they’re quest for an All Ireland, I hope they do it.

But i was talking about the beer bellied hoardes who swell hill 16 and sing when their team is winning. Just as they are ingracious in victory, they are ingracious in defeat.

I genuinely wish the Dublin players and Pilar the best of luck in the future. With supporters like that, they’ll need it.

  33. riemann Says:

If they didn’t have to rely so heavily on mattie they would be in much better position.

Although if he is in gear he will have the beating of mcmenamin

  34. red hand sam Says:

happy slapping in croker, remember to bring your handbag next week kerry and cork ladies.

    tir eoghain abu. 03 05 = 08

  35. Spud Says:

riemann i hope you enjoyed the first half yesterday when your +3 bet went out the window, have to laugh at haters like you who show no appreciation for the sport. You and all the other ‘idiot boys’ have been strangely quiet recently.

  36. riemann Says:

    win some lose some

  37. riemann Says:

I used to know a guy named Spud.

He was a pr*ck as well.

  38. Sully Says:

Tyrone are one team Kerry do not want to meet FACT but as Iv had the Kerry/Kilkenny double backed at 4/1 since last April I cant switch my allegience now

  39. Spud Says:

riemann you are a true pot and kettle merchant and i think you should ease up on your comments before your 2 brain cells collide and render you incapable of answering the phone anymore!

  40. riemann Says:

Well done spud you finally managed to put 2 & 2 together

  41. Eamo F Says:

The bookies have got the prices wrong for this game, surely it’s a 5/6 to 6/5 sort of game. Kerry will have to rotate the midfield as they cannot cope with 70 minutes hard football. The Gooch has never starred against Ricey McMeniman, and Sean Cavanagh will torture that Kerry full back line, cannot wait for this

  42. riemann Says:

Dont forget sean kavanagh is probably out…

  43. Spud Says:

But Sean Cavanagh may be fit you muppet! Why are you not posting under your alter ego today kimi?

  44. riemann Says:

Hence is said probably not definitely…

  45. Spud Says:

There is no chance of anyone called Sean Kavanagh taking any part in the final, you may want to place another losing bet on that though!

  46. riemann Says:

    I just might

  47. red hand sam Says:

put sam on the trian from tralee boys, 1st class non stop, destination tyrone welcom back ”SAM”
