Ryder Cup

The raucous celebrations belied the claims of the majority of a decade. The Americans do care about the Ryder Cup and they always have. The ‘it’s my ball and if I’m not winning, I’m going home’ attitude that followed their most recent defeats was a façade to hide the fact that losing hurts, especially when you’re told and you genuinely believe you have the better golfers - most European golf fans will have discovered that very fact late on Sunday evening.

Miguel Angel Jimenez conceding a putt and in turn Europe’s vice-grip on the Ryder Cup was the cue for and explosion of joy and relief that demonstrated that the Americans may have drifted from the competition, but they never fell out of love with it. The popular view is that the result is good for the tournament may hold a kernel of truth, but the reaction of the crowd showed that the Americans still care about the tournament and as unpalatable as four defeats in a row may be, the stateside audiences would still be tuning in for Celtic Manor in 2010.

As much as I’ve moaned about Nick Faldo, I don’t blame him for the defeat. He was oafish in the build-up, downright vulgar at the opening ceremony and constantly egotistical throughout, but his actions didn’t cost Europe anything in the way of points. What really hurt Faldo and Europe was the return he got from Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington - his leaders in terms of ranking and big-time experience. That and the irresistible form of Azinger’s men.

The Americans played some wonderful golf and holed the vital putts. The Europeans couldn’t buy a putt all weekend. Tee to green, the differences were miniscule, but for the three days the standards of putting were what separated the teams. The Americans holed the crucial ones, the Europeans had the knack of getting the weight right, but getting the read wrong. Paul Casey seemed to sum up the European display in his struggles. Prior to the event, Casey was the less moot of Faldo’s picks, but he looked very much like a player who hasn’t won in over a year. Chances to sink big putts came and went and if he had been involved at the sharp end of more tournaments, perhaps they would have dropped.

Ian Poulter was brilliant and he showed a side to him that his indulgent comments suggested wasn’t there. He was the quintessential team player and his expressive reactions showed that this meant a lot to him. Whether or not his relief was as a result of answering the critics or genuine delight at helping the team is open to question, but in this case it’s irrelevant. To borrow the words of Adam Smith and lazily apply them in an inappropriate context, self interest is for the common good. Poulter put points on the board and he’s more than welcome in two years time. If only he could use the time to stop the pompous statements and make himself a true darling of the galleries, then all the better for the Europeans.

There can be no excuses. Faldo didn’t screw up and the crowds were vociferous but never vicious. The simple truth is for three days the American players played the better golf.

  1. ian poulter rules Says:

where is your faldope picture?? saying he was stupid to pick poulter??

I told you before that poulter was all class and bums like you shouldent be
talking about him like the way you were.

IM glad he has shut u morons up - you guys think ur witty and funny - you have
proved what i always thought - that your a bunch of morons that work
on this site….POULTER HAS SHUT U MORONS UP - well done ian you r a LEGEND.

    Paddy power - DOH!!!!!!!!

  2. stevo Says:

Well put Aidan. I have to admit to having become a ‘headwear consumer’ regarding Poulter. He played with more fire and passion than the rest of the Europeans put together. I also agree with you about Faldo - he didn’t lose the Ryder Cup, his players did (well, the Spanish ones at least). None of this takes away the fact that both Poulter and Faldo have obnoxious personalities, and ‘ian poulter rules’ calling Poulter a LEGEND, is like calling Graham Norton a COMEDIAN - neither of them will ever reach that respective status.

  3. MARTIN Says:

FALDO LOST THIS RYDER CUP FOR EUROPE IN HIS INABILITY TO BE A LEADER AND HIS EXTREMELY POOR JUDGEMENT CALLS!!!
WHEN HIS FIRST FEW PLAYERS IN THE SINGLES WERE IN TROUBLE, WHERE WAS FALDO?
GIVING OUT CANS OF BEER TO THE FANS ON THE FIRST TEE. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!
HAVING THE LIKES OF WESTWOOD, MCDOWELL, POULTER, AND HARRINGTON AS THE LAST FEW OUT ON THE COURSE WAS RIDICULOUS!!!
THEY WERE BEHIND GOING INTO DAY 3 SO NEEDED POINTS ON THE BOARD QUICKLY. YES HINDSIGHT IS A GREAT THING BUT ANYONE COULD HAVE PICKED A BETTER ORDER THAN THE WAY HE PUT THEM OUT.
THE ONLY GOOD DECISION HE MADE FOR THE ENTIRE RYDER CUP WAS PICKING POULTER!!!!

  4. tonton zola mokouko Says:

martin, if you actually had a look at the results of the singles, you’d have seen that we got 2.5 points from the opening 4 matches - which we would have definitely taken beforehand given that azinger was always going to top-load. that set us up with a chance - if the lads in the middle could have kept us in it, then the experienced players at the bottom could have had a crack at it.

unfortunately, when players like harrington, westwood and in particular garcia aren’t at the races, we were never going to be competitive against a good USA team, playing inspired golf in front of such a partisan crowd.

  5. GolfBoy Says:

Perry/Weekley/Kim were all -8 for yesterdays singles. Curtis was -5 and Holmes was close to that as well! If Europe even had the advantage of seeing the american line up before the singles on sunday they still would have lost.
Some bad decisions by Faldo in the fourballs though…Casey/Garcia…..great tee to green but couldnt hole a putt between them. The stricker/curtis half was vital on saturday evening.

  6. dan32 Says:

tonton you just said it yourself — “if the lads in the middle could have kept us in it, then the experienced players at the bottom could have had a crack at it”…. “if” and “could” but they shouldn have been in that position, they should have got the best players out at the start to get the points on the board and put the pressure back on the americans then we could see how they would have faired. faldo has to take some off the blame considering he (and dj spoony) picked the singles but saying that the americans made the puts that needed to be made and under azinger they well deserved to win

  7. irene Says:

Hindsight is wonderful - but even before the tee-off yesterday we were all wondering why he left the best to last - I think faldo should have played his strongest players in positions 5/6/7 to give an adrenalin boost to the players coming behind them - having said all that the USA played out of their skins - see you all in wales

  8. Sam's Coming Home Says:

    American’s are shaved monkeys

  9. spud Says:

    nice use of “vociferous”

  10. The Gooch Says:

Faldo is still a clown and altough it is a bit harsh to say he that he lost us the Ryder Cup, he certainly did very little for us to win it. He got lots of flack for picking Poulter but that was because he left Clarke out who I believe was a major loss for the Europeans both on and off the course. Initially, Poulter got the blame which was a bit harsh as he is a good player on his day (but hardly a legend). Clarke should have been Faldo’s 1st choice and he should have left Casey out if he fancied Poulter so much. Things got worse as soon as the team arrived in the USA. Faldo and some of the players appeared bullish and over-confident leading up to the event and as for Faldos opening ceremony speech - it was cringe stuff - very embarrasing for everyone concerned, especially the players. As for the USA, Azingers speech was assured and too the point and I could’nt help thinking at that stage that it was already 2-0 to the Americans. Faldos pairings during the first two days were at times ’strange’ but were harder to make in the absence of Clarke in that partnering Clarke with Westwood is a no-brainer. Anyway, I think the damage was done before a ball was struck. The USA players matched the off-course performance of their Captain and played superb golf throughout the tournament. Roll on Wales in two years - A new day, A new CAPTAIN!

  11. stevo Says:

My vote for next captain, is the return of Sam ‘The Bam’ Torrance.

  12. JJ Says:

Poulter played great, but tough to be menacing and lead with frosted spikes. Why was the real heart and soul still in Europe?

Funny how ego can kill a team before you start. Still a great match - see you all in Wales. I have two years to figure out where the hell it is - a country, part of Great Britain, the United Kingdom? I guess I’ll just wait for Boo to explain it to me.

  13. jack Says:

Americans had all the momentum…with excellent play …on home ground.. home crowd..etc. Agree with the Gooch that Faldo is a clown… too arrogant and full of himself. Kim and Boo also assholes between high fives and clowning around like an idiot on a golf stick. Oh and could someone please tell Poulter how unproffesional he looks chewing gum on the opening night and before tee offs..so arrogant and cocky but credit where its due he played great golf but Spit Out the Gum !!!!!

  14. malcolm dollery Says:

stevo how about jp mc manus and we could all have a good punt

  15. Jackdaw Says:

In response to “IAN POULTER RULES” Above, I would have to say that all this kneejerk stuff is a bit previous. Yes Poulter was the best performer (on either side) at Valhalla. Yes Poulter is a very talented and determined golfer. But the cold facts are that none of that adds up to justifying his inclusion in the TEAM.
He missed his last two cuts in the states, stuck his fingers up at the european tour by not showing up at gleneagles to play for his place. The reason? he knew his form wasnt good enough, and Faldos hand would have been forced on the issue. he was told to stay away, work on his game, and faldo would take the flak. CRASS AND SHAMEFUL DISHONESTY.
I’ve been reading and hearing this morning about how Poulter is going to turn this experience into Major wins, the same way England will win the next world cup on the back of a recent result in Croatia. Wakey, Wakey lads, this Team was sundered and doomed to its fate on the sunday afternoon at Gleneagles.

  16. tonton zola mokouko Says:

jackdaw - whatever helps you sleep at night son.

  17. Spud Says:

tonton we all know that you are a fan of Henman and Murray so you have a history of supporting losers, i’m sure you sleep well every night given that you are happy to accept second place!!!

  18. tonton zola mokouko Says:

spud, as ever, you’re not making much sense. but it’s okay, i like you, so i’ll explain it to you. it’s not a case of settling for 2nd best, it’s a case of understanding why we were 2nd best.

faldo didn’t settle for 2nd best, which is why he picked poulter, an excellent decision as it played out. he was let down by some woeful performances by big name players who he should have been able to rely on. if these players had turned up then europe would have won the ryder cup, and to claim that anything would have been different should darren clarke have been picked is naive and short-sighted.

people read the gutter newspapers and soak it all up, so they’re simply regurgitating what the tired old hacks who’ve hated faldo for decades are spewing out at the moment.

i trust we won’t see you commenting on golf until the two years from now when you’ll no doubt be hoping that europe lose again so you can have a good whinge.

  19. Spud Says:

I’m glad Europe lost as I have no affinity with any team with a captain like Faldo and a player like Poulter in it - not that I like U S A and their moronic supporters but a real team produced a real performance in a much more important event at Croke Park on Sunday, despite being written off by all they triumphed against the odds and that is what born winners do!!

  20. Eamo F Says:

    Well said TonTon

  21. Jackdaw Says:

TonTon. Youve missed the point completely. Its not about whether Darren Clarke was picked or not, and i’ve no allegiance to him over Poulter. Leaving hindsight and the press (Gutter or otherwise) out of it, put yourself in Westwood, Garcia, or Harringtons Shoes while watching Faldo announce his Picks. “Whats this guy up to” i’d imagine is the first thing that flashed through their minds. Just to let yoe know exactly where I stand. I would have loved to see him pick Ross Fisher and Martin kaymer. Maybe then these so called Senior players might have thought Faldo too was doing his best for the team.
Anyway the only reason I have an opinion to express about something that means absolutely nothing to me is to provoke a reaction. Still sleeping like a baby.

  22. tonton zola mokouko Says:

any real team players wouldn’t be thinking anything other than, “right the captain’s picked the wildcards, let’s get going and win this thing”. anyone questioning his picks is themselves disrupting the team. faldo made a call, got it right, and people still want to crucify him. it’s utter madness, and a typical depressing attitude that is consistent with the mentality of people from these shores.

that’s me finished on this subject. all systems go for celtic manor!

  23. keith Says:

no team spirit ,clarke monty would have `rallyed the team, look at the americans boo weekley was doing it ,the rookie was doing it ,the captain was driving from hole to hole and waving the fans on , faldo was in eating his prawn sambo ,garcia lost early and went back out on the coarse , he was just saying to his team mates i lost early sorry but u can do it , whispering in a players ear as he walks to the next hole u can do it like pussin boots out of shreik , it was a shambles ,

  24. Tony Hill Says:

Looks like a few tinted irish glasses on this board. I notice a lot of you have not picked up on the fact Harrington has not played a good Ryder cup since 2002. I have no axe to grind with Harrington as i believe he has been the best European golfer of the last 2 years & a nicer bloke you will not meet. I wonder how many of you would knock Poulters character if he was from the Emerald Isle? A lot of what he says is tongue in cheek & he is not as egoistic as he is painted to be. His dress sense does not help i admit.
The team has to give out an air of confidence, the Americans are never lacking in ’shooting the mouth’, otherwise the press would soon be on thier backs. I agree some comments were a bit arrogant, mostly from Faldo, But, when Americans say things in the same manner it is called self belief.
I agree with the fact Faldo thinks its all about him most of the time & i have never warmed to him as a person. Garcia was sick the last 2 weeks & was on antibiotics. Westwood was stupid enough to try out new golf shoes & got blisters. It seems we were doomed from the start. By the way Mr Jackdaw(got a reaction :-) ), Poulter knew he was in the team weeks before & did not need to turn up for Gleneagles. He kept his mouth shut for once as it would have embarrassed Tit Faldo. He would definatly have turned up if he needed to qualify.
I would have picked Clarke, not because he is Irish, in front of Casey, not because he is English, Because he is putting better & has a couple of wins to his name plus he has more exp.
The best team won & i look forward to seeing Boo make a fool of his self off the course as well as on it at celtic manor :-).

  25. Jackdaw Says:

Tony, I think you will find thats exactly what i said!
    2 posts ago.

  26. Wex Says:

Player of the tournament for me was not ian poulter, it was Hunter Mahan he’s a serious player. Hopefully this will give him the push to go on and win regularly and contend for majors, he’s a player i’ve watched closely of the last 3/4 years and have been waiting for him to step up to the top level.

Fair play to poulter for scoring 4 points, the only thing is that when you look at the games he played, 2 against cink and campbell which was a terrible partnership and they only got to play together a second time because rose and poulter collapsed from 3 up at mid way in the first foursomes to let them win, another was against striker and curtis this turned out basically to be a 2 on 1 game as curtis didn’t even make a birdie all day. His 3rd point against perry and furyk was achieved on the back of excellent golf from graeme mcdowell who kept them in the game from the 6/7th hole, fair enough he birdied 17 and 18 but most credit for the win should side with mcdowell. He played great against striker.

His inclusion is still not justifible based on his form and the fact that he’s never won anything of any real importance. Poulter like faldo is a clown, Faldo got lucky that he got points. If he’s really serious about becoming a top class golfer, he should go work on his game, quit dressing like a clown, go about his work quitely and then maybe he could be taken seriously, at the moment all he wants is media attention, worried too much about what he’ll wear, concentrate on golf son!

  27. Jackdaw Says:

    Bang on Wex.

  28. Wex Says:

Confirmation of faldo the clown, opening ceremony gaffes:

Calling Soren Hansen - Soren Stenson - he could have at least learnt the names off.
Claiming harrington had a great ryder cup 2 years ago, camera pans to harrington mouthing to guy beside him “I got a half point”
Turns around to Graeme McDowell “are you from ireland or northern ireland” take the time out from massaging ur ego to find out a few things about ur players or at least write a speech rather than rambling on.

European players looked embaressed by him. USA went one up here i think. Azinger spoke well and with a purpose.

  29. Bazza Bonds Says:

Wex - you seem to really hate Ian Poulter. Admit it - the lad had a great week, was our best player, closely followed by Rose and McDowell, and was a credit to himself and Europe. 100% justified his pick, and well done to him for proving the doubters wrong.

And if Faldo was lucky that Poulter got the points, would he have been unlucky if Poulter hadn’t? Face it sunshine, your argument is more holey than a Swiss nunnery.

And the colour of trousers he chooses to wear is irrelevant - nobody had a go at Payne Stewart for dressing eccentrically.

  30. Jackdaw Says:

Payne Steward won championships and majors.

  31. Bazza Bonds Says:

So it’s okay to dress like a clown if you’re successful, but not if you’re not?

Makes no sense at all. What on earth does clothing have to do with anything?

  32. Jackdaw Says:

It doesnt. You brought it up. But dont compare Ian Poulter to Payne Stewart. As I’ve previously said I have nothing against Ian Poulter, except for the sneaky little arrangement he had with Faldo. If you took the trouble to read the threads above instead of reacting to the last post your argument just doesnt hold water. Poulter performed, YES. But what did his selection and the sneaky way Faldo did it do to Team Spirit.

  33. Wex Says:

its ok when ur as good as payne stewart was, poulter is not in his class i’m afraid bazza! Ur comparing a 3 time major champion to at best an average player on d european tour and so far a failure on the us tour. Maybe he’ll surprise us all and win a major or a big tournament but on past evidence it’s unlikely.

As i’ve said previous to the ryder cup, if poulter didn’t have d clothes and the attitude to get into the limelight, based on his golf ability alone he’d b a journey man on the european tour comparable maybe to paul broadhurst or alastair forsyth.

Maybe it is in the clothes though bazza note he played better in the toned down european clothin than he usually does wearing his ridiculous outfits!

  34. Bazza Bonds Says:

He can wear a tutu for all I care Wex! I’m only going to judge him on his golf, and he’s always been a promising player. His 2nd in the Open this year, with an excellent final round showed he can really challenge in the future, and an excellent Ryder Cup performance should give him the self-belief (if he ever needed it) to go onto the next level. Whatever happens next, he had a stormer of a week and it’s time to lay off him!

  35. Jackdaw Says:

What would we do for fun then Bazza?

  36. Bazza Bonds Says:

    That’s a fair point.

    The Mechanic’s ridiculous ponytail maybe?

Or (copying the European crowds this week): “Boo Ate All The Pies?”….

  37. Wex Says:

A promising player? Come on he’s been on tour with 10 years, he’s 32/33, no win this year and only 2 top 10 finishes, don’t get blinkered by one weeks golf bazza he’ll be back missin cuts soon enough!

  38. Wanghole Says:

Poulter played excellent golf - and with passion, unlike some of the bigger players in the European team. But somehow you can’t help thinking that the passion was removed from the players by an idiotic and embarrassing captain. Anyone who believes that Faldo told Poulter of his wildcard pick on the final Sunday at Gleneagles is on a different planet. Darren Clarke’s standing in the team room would not have sat well with Faldo’s egotistical manner. Clarke would have been a player the rookies would have looked up to and respected. That of course would have taken away the sense of importance that Faldo craves. Not knowing names, countries of birth, Ryder Cup records, where his Vice Captain was sitting, DJ Spoony?, press conference nightmares, backhand dealings with wildcard picks, the list is endless. What an embarrassment.

  39. Bazza Bonds Says:

Not sure the rookies/inexperienced players needed any more people to look up to - Faldo and Olazabal were clearly enough. Poulter (1 ryder cup) had a stormer, McDowell (rookie) had a great few days, Rose took 3 points from 4 as a rookie, Wilson won his debut match against Mickelson’s pair, then shot a decent round against Weekley despite losing, a few shots under par.

  40. Wanghole Says:

I agree completely with the comments about Poulter, McDowell, Rose and Wilson however it still doesn’t take away from the very real fact that they were led by an idiot. The European Teams are driven by team spirit and it was so clear that that spirit was non existent in Kentucky. The demeanour of the senior players was there for all to see and the entire event failed to mirror the togetherness shown in previous Ryder Cups. Even Olazabal looked uncomfortable. In fact he looked nearly as uncomfortable as he did in Faldo’s first press conference when the team was announced!

  41. Tony Hill Says:

I still remember the incident where James threw Faldos well wishes to the team before Brookline in the bin. Some people thought it a bit harsh. What they failed to realise was that Faldo moaned & cried like a baby, caused a scene with the press, when he did not get the wild card pick he thought he deserved. The fact he had played s*** for 2 years escaped him.
At least Monty took the news better & behaved correctly as far as the media was concerned when the team was picked. He knew he was not playing well enough & past Ryder cup performances did not count this time round. He had a bit of reservations about Poulter not playing at Gleneagles. Now, looking back, he may find that Faldo was to blame not Poulter & maybe Montys getting near to Faldos record was an issue as far as Captain Faldo was concerned. The man cannot remember some of the players names or what country they are from but, ask him statistics, esp. his, & he will reel them off all day.
Sorry Jackdaw, read the earlier post when i wrote. Was reading the last one when i was almost finished. Too busy ignoring the misses to re write :-).

Who will be in the next Team?

  42. The Gooch Says:

Just a quick point on Faldos opening ceremony speech. I presume Faldo (the clown) knows that Graham McDowell is Northern Irish - altough he is a complete idiot I can’t believe that he doesn’t know the nationality of one of his team. I believe the hidden question he was asking McDowell in front of 600 million viewers was basically which foot did he kick with - in other words are you catholic or protestant - do you consider yourself Irih or Northern Irish. That was a far worse gaffe than not knowing his nationality and I could see that Graham was embarassed about it. As for the rest of his speech - well…. what can I say? CLOWN!

  43. The Gooch Says:

One more thing. Darren Clarke to win the British Masters starting tomorrow. Well rested and raring to go. Get on with Paddy Power @ 28/1. You should even have a bet Ton Ton altough you will probable wait till next year and back Poulter to win a major. Sad - some people have money to burn.

  44. TmcG Says:

why pick a european captain whose based in the states, did’nt make sense. Why is padraig always exhausted,he seems to be the only golfer who always moans about it.

  45. Ray Says:

Good point TmcG, harrington is getting quiet irretating always goin on about tiredness, being mentally tired, and focus not being there. If he’s tired don’t play and quit whinging. Maybe he’s playing for the appearance money he can now demand after winning 3 majors.

  46. The Gooch Says:

Apologies about my email above suggesting Darren Clarke to win the British Masters. It was an unfortunate typing error. I meant to say Marcus Fraser. For those of you who were unfortunate enough to have a punt please e-mail the following address and I will arrange a refund - thegooch@keepyourmouthshutinfuture.ie

  47. Tony Hill Says:

Very Dry The Gooch :-). I would’nt back Poulter to win a major next year but, i would back him to finish higher than Darren in the World rankings next year. The spark seems to be missing a bit from Clarkes game at the moment. I hope he returns to the form he showed 4/5 years ago.
How about this for a bet. Sandy Lyle next Ryder cup captain. Its between him & Olazabal.

As for Harrington being tired, Jumping back & Forth to the States does not help. Some people can cope better with the jet lag. We will know how tired he is by how many tournys he turns up for at the end of the season. If Westwood wins this week he will have to play a few tournaments to keep the lead in the Order of merit.

  48. dermotmckenna Says:

wex great comment on poulters golf based purely on golf facts ok he won 4 points 1 of these was against cink n campbell who played terrible golf and d another point he won was against curtis and holmes in fourballs a game which curtis did not make 1 birdie if they had played against mickelson and kim d same day who shot 61 against harrington n mc dowell they wud be more than likely be cleaning there clubs after 15 holes at best in dat sense i tink dat poulter was lucky to hav played as much golf as he did

  49. dermotmckenna Says:

and can also add on d 1st day poulter and rose completely choked against campbell and cink 3 up wit 6 to play and lost on 18 any other captain wud hav dropped either 1 if not both of them but wat does “captain cock up ” d cocky egoistical mr faldo do put them out in d afternoon i suppose u hav 2 look after ur english buddys

  50. tonton zola mokouko Says:

didn’t st padraig go 3 up with 6 to play and choke on the morning of day 1?

  51. Sully Says:

Dont you realise you cannot critisise Padraig Harrington the Dubs or Robbie Keane on this blog.Christ Man theyl tear you apart from limb to limb

  52. Tony Hill Says:

dermotmckenna, its not who you play but how you play. When the media were praising up Poulter after he & McDowell won he was quick to throw praise towards Gmac about the 3 great clutch putts he put away when he himself had gone off the boil. He is a team player & i wonder how many others in the team, nationality does not matter, would have performed under the pressure he was because of dickhead Faldos wildcard picks.
The way Faldo dragged it out until after Gleneagles was a joke. He had made his mind up weeks before & i was hoping Darren would win at Gleneagles just to see how Faldo talked his way around that.
It is not the English part that matterred, more that they all know each other in the Florida golf set.
Long after we have passed on, Europe will be like a United States. I hope then our nationality does not blind us against certain players. The press does not help in these matters but, on occassions they do get it right. Faldo is so far up his own backside it hurts.
If Nick Dougherty had finished 2nd in the British Open he would have picked him mainly because he came from his academy. Thats how he thinks. Me Me Me Me, patronise someone, Me Me Me.

  53. Tony Hill Says:

Sully, you will never find me critise Keano even though he left us. Harrington is a great golfer & a gentleman. As for Dublin as a sporting context :-) that is a open book as far as the Gaelic football is concerned.
From your last piece i guess you are From Dublin?
How many Man. united fans are there in Dublin?
The ones who really support them when they play Celtic not the other way round:-).
You cannot support 2 clubs but, it amazes me how many wear the Red & white but not when they play Celtic? You can like many teams but support only one.

  54. The Gooch Says:

Tony Hill- In relation to next captain. It is crucial we make the right choice next time and Europe win. The USA have won before but this is the first time they have had the best TEAM. Sandy Lyle would make a good Captain but I would love to give Langer a second shot given the brilliant job he did 4 years ago. I don’t think thats an option though and I think Faldo has a better chance of getting the job. Could you imagine? Faldo managing in Wales! It doesn’t bear thinking about.

  55. barry millard Says:

Faldo should have kept Fanny, as now he has turned out like one.

  56. Sully Says:

I aint from Dublin but by the grace of God and im United since I could talk.Celtic is an Irish thing but with me its United first and Celtic a close third

  57. Tony Hill Says:

I like the close third Sully. At least you have not had to suffer for so many years like me! Being a Spurs fan is hard work :-(.
As for Langer? The Gooch has got it spot on. I believe the Ryder cup Captain selection commitee, Darren Clarke & Ken Brown are on it, will be looking for someone new as they are of the thinking you only get the job once now days. It looks like a good & bad scenario.
No more Langer is bad. No more Faldo is good :-). I would have said that even if we had won.

what a load of crap all this is….not 1 person mentioned why carl pettersson wasnt picked? 6 top 10s and a win on the us tour this year is that not form? if he was american he would have made it thru there points list! clarke had a chance for a pick no doubt but poults was nxt on the points list and has been top 50 wgr for the last few years.yes clarke won twice this year but hardly the worlds biggest events? anyway good for the cup that us won..!

I think you’ll find I did (in the “FAL-DOPE”) blog. AND Martin Kaymer, AND Ross Fisher.
The whole anti Poulter argument gets diluted by these Clarke/Monty Arsehole “Golf” journalists. If they argued For a realistic alternative they might get listened to.
    ALL ACADEMIC NOW……..
