It was only a few weeks ago that Bob Bubka kicked our asses and ensured it will be another year of stealing from beggars shopping at Aldi for the staff of Paddy Power when he remarkably tipped up Lucas Glover to win the US Open. Lots of people had the good sense to listen to him and as the old saying probably should go, “if you can’t beat them, hire them to do some punditry” and that’s what we’ve done. So was this the birth of a golfing Nostradamus or was it a bigger flash in the pan than the time we tried to fry a lighter? Only reading on will tell.
Not exactly sticking his neck out on the prediction front, Bubka had a look at the weather expected at Turnberry - and apparently there will be some. “I’ve heard so many weather forcecasts for this week that I’m in a tizzy myself trying to figure it out,” the American shared, “it could very much depend on what draw you get” possibly describing how a game of Pictionary might unfold.
There’s no tips in here that will make you rich, but have a listen if you like hearing about the weather.
Predicting that there is going to be weather was never going to be enough to earn the standard Paddy Power pundits’ payment of a free poncho and all the water-cooler water you can carry in your pockets, so Bob had a go at pulling another Lucas Glover out of his er … big brain. “I do fancy Tiger to come away with this title,” he revealed, edging back to the safety of ‘predicting some weather’ territory. “It’s very generous of Paddy Power to be paying 7 places, most places only give you 6,” he brown-nosed, securing his poncho, “two names come to mind when looking for an outsider. Hunter Mahan, a young American very much in the mould of Lucas Glover – did I mention I tipped Lucas Glover up to win the US Open? – and Sean O’Hair.”
That was about the gist of it, but listen to the rest of the interview here:
One of the advantages of travelling around with the golf tour is getting some inside information and realising that he’d only just done enough to secure his poncho, Bob pulled out some big guns. Even though he spent last week trashing the semi-pros, Padraig Harrington has kept up the good form for the Open, according to the admittedly biased Harrington. “Padraig was somewhat surprised that his form was holding up in practice here,” Bubka said, passing on the second hand information, “Padraig never really talks up his chances, but he had that little gleam in his eye.” In words we never thought we’d hear again, Bubka reckons David Duval is looking pretty well with his putting on the practice greens looking pretty spot on, “he was working on something with his psychology coach and his putter was working from that ten foot range.”
Listen to the gossipy part of the interview here:
Thanks Bob, the water cooler is over there on the left hand side. Pockets only – no hands.

Tiger ends his major drought , weather could be as dodgey as carlos tevez`s agent but 3 times Turnberry has held The Open and 3 times world no. 1 has won. Fairways not distance is the key and if Tiger leaves his driver in the bag his iron play will prevail. Seans tip of furyk is sweet but I think McDowell at 66-1 e/w is quality.
