US PGA - Up The Ying Yang!

Over the last few weeks golf had become boringly predictable. Tiger had won twice on the bounce and winning the US PGA Championship looked a certainty following some magical displays. The American was invincible, or so we thought. Convinced that the cat would get the cream, we opted to settle Woods as the winner on Saturday - two days before the finish. Unfortunately, we hadn’t counted on Korean YE Yang. In hindsight, it wasn’t a wise move, as has been pointed out on numerous occasions, but if you live by the sword, you die by the sword – or, in our case, get a big hole cut in your pocket where money falls out. No Christmas bonus, I guess. Eh, Paddy?

If nothing else, Yang was a deserved winner. Woods’ putter had clearly gone “cold” and nothing would drop on the greens. Yang, on the other hand, sank an eagle chip on 14 which turned the tide in his favour. His approach shot on the 18th at Hazeltine was reminiscent of Harrington’s on the 17th at Royal Birkdale in the Open last year. A bold statement of confidence in his own ability; it was inspiring.

While the Korean’s victory is a watershed moment for men’s golf in Asia and his performance was classy, he’ll be just another Rich Beem, Todd Hamilton or [include another one hit wonder] in years to come. Backing up your first Major success with another is the true mark of a golf champion. I can’t see Yang reaching that level again. He’s come from absolutely nowhere to win, a bit like John Daly in ’91, but repeating the feat will be difficult.

Thanks to the 37 year old, though, Tiger’s unbeatable reputation is somewhat damaged – but definitely not broken. You’d have to think Tiger’s Major-less streak will come to an end at the 2010 US Masters.

Why could Tiger not finish the job he started so well? Is Yang a one hit wonder? Join everybody else: point and laugh at us, a la Nelson Muntz, about our crazy early payout.

I thought it was very fair of pp to payout friday night.
He very much looked the winner to me aswell at that stage, in fact right through until the last few holes last night.
Ok they got caught this time but look at all the free advertising, even mentioned on the golf commentary last night on sky.
Keep up the good work Paddy, besides it’s only a loan you gave us hehe

Honestly i thought paying out after 36 was a mistake. Hazeltine is a very demanding course physically and mentally and was not short of water hazards either. The surrounds of the greens was very shaggy and made short pitching and chipping a lottery where luck in the form of getting a good lie counted hugely. Should of thought of that paddy bad decision!

  4. Scott Says:

Paddy, you did the honorable thing by sucking it up.
I’m sure a lot of betters re-bet on Tiger ( like me ), although I loaded up on Yang at the last hole. On the bright side, you possibly just bagged about 2,000 new customers.

  5. Brian Says:

Thanks alot pp. I backed Yang on Wed €2.50ew @150/1 and backed Woods on Friday at Evens. Collected on Woods on Saturday and Yang today! What a result!

  6. john Says:

  7. Thomas Says:

  8. Dermot Says:

Wish I had caught some of it though….and yes, its only a short term loan

  9. CONOR MACATTACK Says:

thanks very much paddy, tiger had it in the bag an you knew it, but its a funny old game an these things can happen, i backed tiger early doors an got rewarded, i will do it again he will only let ya down once out of ten and Paddy pays ya out ha ha, The guy is a genius, !!!!!!!!!! Tiger Woods not PP……. THE TIGER ROARS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

  10. SteveO Says:

    It’s Nelson Muntz, not Munce. That’s 2 things you’ve got wrong then…………

  11. Dave Says:

I backed Woods to be leading after Round 1 and to win outright (10/1) and have been told that it is a loser. How come you have paid on every other bet on Woods ,but not on this? It seems you are not as generous as you like to make out in the media .

  12. John Says:

” Yang, on the other hand, sinked an eagle chip on 14… “. Surely ” SANK an eagle chip “. Hope you have enough left over for English grinds for your scribe.

  13. tigerswood Says:

It’s all more than fishy to me…surely it’s a calculated “pay-out”. I don’t believe for one minute that PP lost anything near what the media reported…mathematics versus reality…The bookies always win in the end. Padraign Harrington…now that was a stinky choke…no one John Paramoore to blame over than one…I bet PP did v well on Paddy H…never again, backing Harrington..would be too nervous of a repeat of last week n my money is to precious to me.

  14. Nelson Muntz Says:

    “Haw-Haw!”

  15. Duncan Carmichael Says:

    Nelson and Paddy,

It will now be in golf folklore.

A free shot after a whiff would be a Mulligan

An 8 on a hole while in contention would be a Harrington.

Paddy H went into jerk mode after last year’s majors.
    What goes around, comes around.

  16. George Says:

So the question is, will you really get new customers from this publisity stunt !?

because isnt the golf season over……

and anyone backing horses already knows about this stunt, like paying out on Aidan O Brian’s horse before the race (the name escapes me at this time)

Come on marketing guys/gals really need to work harder !!! :-)

  17. Eldrick Says:

99 times out of 100 Yang would not beat Tiger. If he hadn’t fluked that eagle on 14 Tiger would have had him. I read that Yang said he was going to eat two Siberian Huskies as part of his celebration dinner. Fact!

  18. arthur Says:

yang was brilliant and so was the payout on tiger. class is class 145 im on

  19. lfc lad Says:
