In a sense it never went away - we’re still updating the table so that you can find out how your bet is looking. But the big news is that our football traders have shown the sort of fearless attitude that made them famous and stepped back into the fray!

X Factor : The Tears Of A Clown

If Danni Minogue has a problem dealing with idiotic chirpy Irishmen she should count her blessings she doesn’t work in Paddy Power. We’re surrounded by them. I’ll have to admit that I’m not sure what exactly went on behind the scenes last week, but whatever it was can’t have justified a full on hissy fit on national television - can it?

Booze And Boxing - Can Hatton Enjoy The Best Of Both Worlds?

Posted by Tom at 6:46pm November 21st, 2008

Category: Sportsbook, Boxing 5 Comments

Ricky Hatton’s new trainer has had a few harsh words for him. Specifically, he’s not impressed with the idea of Hatton meeting him half way on his demands for a booze ban:

“The only way is not to drink at all. Don’t meet me halfway - halfway is nothing. You don’t get half a title or half of being the best pound-for-pound fighter.”

Of course this new trainer is none other than Floyd Mayweather Snr, who has a pretty unique take on parenthood. He wants to get Hatton into shape in order to beat the crap out of his own son (that’s right, Floyd Mayweather Jnr). Isn’t your typical dad supposed to stick up for his kid when the other boys are picking on him?

Hatton looks pretty fighting fit for the weekend’s battle with Paulie Malignaggi, but he still won’t fully commit to a puritan lifestyle. And why should he? Maybe it’s not totally professional but you only live your life once. If a man couldn’t enjoy the odd pie and pint it would be a pretty sorry existence.

By all accounts Malignaggi couldn’t punch his way out of a paper bag and suffers from something called ‘brittle’ hands. Sounds like a serious disadvantage for a boxer - and should mean that Hatton may get away with his ‘half-assed’ attitude this time.

But even if it means he doesn’t reach the very top, some of us happen to think that Hatton’s attitude is a breath of fresh air. He’s happy to be a good boxer and enjoy his life at the same time. Is that a crime? Maybe he’s not making the absolute most of his talent, but then again how many of us even do that?

Sergeant Falls On His Sword

So let’s get this straight. It’s OK to invite a fat old man onto Strictly Come Dancing so that we can all laugh at him. But as soon as he starts winning the public over and is in with a chance of going all the way, he is somehow spoiling the integrity of the competition and making the whole thing ‘a joke’.

Is It Time To Get Strict With Sergeant?

Posted by Tom at 5:45pm November 18th, 2008

It’s good to know that the Irish and the English can agree on one thing. We prefer a fat ‘entertainer’ to a committed professional.

That’s all that can explain the ongoing popularity of both Andy Reid and John Sergeant. The big man may be providing chuckles to the nation as he drags the lovely Kristina around the floor, but surely he cannot be allowed to turn the noble and ancient art of ballroom dancing into a laughing stock?

Can Reid Avoid The Trap-door?

Posted by Tom at 4:28pm November 12th, 2008

It’s the mystery that has all of Ireland talking. Well, it’s one of them at least, alongside “why do apparently sane women find Eoghan Quigg attractive?” and “how come Paddy Power NEVER tips a winner - even by accident?”.

Yes, I’m talking about Giovanni Trappatoni’s refusal to consider world-class creative midfielder / Sunderland journeyman (delete as applicable) Andy Reid for a place in his squad - never mind the first team!

Hull To Freeze Over?

Posted by Tom at 5:42pm September 29th, 2008

Category: Football, Sportsbook, Premiership Handicap 5 Comments

You know something strange is going on when Hull City are favourites for the Premiership. OK, it’s just the Handicap version, but we reckon that the handicap table - available here at Paddy Power - is the true reflection of who is doing the business.

Now that half the Premiership clubs are owned by billionaires the playing field can hardly be described as ‘level’. That’s why we give some clubs get a points start to make the battle a little fairer. And with their massive 56 points in hand, the Tigers are looking good to take the title at 6/1!

At the start of the season we weren’t alone in writing off the promoted sides, but it’s fair to say all three have shown the boo boys that a properly run and well-managed club is always capable of mounting a challenge. Are you watching Spurs and Newcastle? OK, Stoke (20/1) and West Brom (12/1) are finding things tough, but neither looks likely to do a Derby County this season. Fair play to both of them.

Meanwhile at the business end of the table Liverpool - now at 12/1 - have already overtaken Spurs! Chelsea also look like contenders and whilst most of the ‘mid table’ pack have dissapointed, Villa have to be one to watch. They look impressive under O’Neill and are already moving up the table and in to 8/1 for the title.

Keep track of it all right here.
