It’s through gritted teeth that we congratulate Cristoph for winning yesterday’s Cheltenham Katchphrase. We’ve not got anything against good aul Cristoph, it’s just that we thought it was a really difficult one, but he got it really easily. So for the final day, we’ve concoted a humdinger that - fingers crosseed - will perplex the finest minds to frequent the Paddy Power Blog.

I said that today we’d done our best to make it difficult and for the first time this week, we’ve gone the distance. The final piece of the puzzle is removed:

Cheltenham Day 4 - Live

Posted by Aidan at 8:25am March 13th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Horse Racing Tips, Racing, Sportsbook

It’s Gold Cup day and if there is one thing that could make us feel pretty much the same level of excitement that we already felt, it’s that the Queen is dusting off her crown and planning to rock up to watch Barber Shop not quite be good enough to win. Makes you proud to be indifferent, doesn’t it?

CURRENT “HELL OF A HORSE” COUNT: 2

CURRENT “MY FAMILY AND I” COUNT: 0

=====================
5.30pm That’s it for this year. I was going to finish things up with a poll to see who was the star of the week, but I think Ruby had that one in the bag since about Wednesday. Today’s Hell Of A Horse Count was woefully low and let’s not even mention the My Family And I Count. That’s all from me.

5.20pm Oh Crick brings the curtain down on a great Festival with the thrilling kind of finish that we’ve seen several times this week.

The result
1st Oh Crick 7/1
2nd Moon Over Miami
3rd French Opera
4th Tramantano

4.46pm The first winner of the Martin Pipe Hurdle is Andytown.

The result
1st Andytown 25/1
2nd Midnight Chase
3rd Big Eared Fran
4th Font

4.25pm
Martin Pipe Hurdle
Long story short - Oscatello. Course success, nice weight and in good form.

4.15pm Normally the Cheltenham Katchphrase is long since over by the time we switch across to Racing UK, but we’ve got a really pickle today. If you don’t have Racing UK, wave a go for your chance to win £/€100 in Free Bets which you could invest in some winners which could go toward buying the channel. If not, use our Bet & Watch facility.

4.11pm Cappa Bleu takes the honours in the Foxhunter Chase.

The result
1st Cappa Bleu 11/2
2nd Turthen
3rd Baby Run

3.45pm
Foxhunter Chase
We just saw a horse regain the Gold Cup and I think now we’ll see a horse retain the Hunter’s Gold Cup. Amicelli made me a lot of money last year and at the risk of letting my heart do the driving, I going to plump for him to do it again.

3.30pm Ruby and Kauto make history with an imperious round of jumping to regain the Gold Cup. A fantastic bit of training sees Denman take a valiant second whilst the always game Exotic Dancer has to settle for the position he’s all too familiar with. Great race.

The result
1st Kauto Star 7/4
2nd Denman
3rd Exotic Dancer

3pm
Cheltenham Gold Cup
It’s almost upon us and the closer we get to the off time, the less convinced I am about anything. If all the talk of Denman’s demise is true, then you have to ignore him, but it’s hard to remember what he did last year, see the price beside his name and not click on it. Equally, Kauto has done nothing wrong. A small bet on Denman or a big bet on Kauto - I haven’t decided yet.

2.50pm Jaysus! His Royal Highness King Ruby almost made it win number 7 of the week, but Weapon’s Amnesty held on to deny him.

The result
1st Weapon’s Amnesty 8/1
2nd Pride Of Dulcote
3rd The Midnight Club

2.34pm
Albert Bartlett Hurdle
It’s so wide open that I’m keeping any investment to a small one. They €1 each way is going on Alpha Ridge.

2.10pm If there was any doubt that this was Ruby’s Cheltenham, then they’re gone as he destroys the field in the County Hurdle.

The result
1st American Trilogy 20/1
2nd Stradbrook
3rd Cockney Trucker
4th Nortonthorpe Lad
Super extra bonus place 5th Kandari

2pm
Vincent O’Brien Hurdle Preview
I spend more time convincing myself in these previews than other people, so I’ll cut to the chase in this race. Although he could land the £75,000 bonus, it’s too soon after the Paddy Power Imperial Cup for him to be at his best. Sunnyhillboy for me.

1.54pm Square 2 on today’s Cheltenham Katchphrase has been revealed!

1.37pm What got into Ebadiyan? He was going along very nicely before deciding to take an alternative route. It was left to Zaynar and Walkon to battle up the hill with Zaynar defying the predictions of doom.

The result
1st Zaynar 11/2
2nd Walkon
3rd Mourad
Super extra bonus place 4th Starluck

12.58pm
Triumph Hurdle Preview
This may sound like a shameless plug and to an extent it is [I know which side my bread is butted on] but because we’re paying 4 places in the Triumph Hurdle, I’d back Simarian. He’s got a lot to find with Walkon and in such a competitive race, I’d be reluctant to back a favourite a rather a short price, so an each way or place only bet on Simarian looks like value.

12.45pm A quick look at the market moves shows some interesting moves.

In the Triumph Hurdle there has been money for Walkon and Ebadiyan.

Dave’s Dream won the Paddy Power Imperial Cup and he’ll earn a £75,000 bonus if he lands the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle. The money says he’s got a chance of doing it because he’s been backed in to 4/1. Sesenta has been the subject of Each Way support.

The move for Browns Bailey is the story of the Albert Bartlett Hurdle as he’s now 12/1 from 18/1 earlier this morning.

Kauto Star has been trimmed slightly for the Gold Cup with Denman and Neptune Collonges going the other way.

In the Foxhunter Chase it’s always worth watching the market and Always Right is the one to look out for as he’s been backed in to 20/1 from 28/1.

There have been a whole heap of moves in the Martin Pipe Hurdle and the Grand Annual Chase, so rather than bore you with them, just have a look at the markets.

12.24pm Breaking news! Perce Rock is still alive!! He’s a non-runner, but he’s still alive. Maybe he’s like the Jesus of horses.

12.05pm The Queen has arrived at Cheltenham by helicopter but hasn’t given us a “hell of a horse” or a “my family and I”. Yet.

11.57am Right, I’ve been busy concoting the most fiendish Cheltenham Katchphrase of the week, that’s why there’s been no updates for a while. Tune in to the blog at about 1pm today for your chance to win £/€100 in Free Bets and have your head absolutely wrecked. Ha, ha, ha!

10.18am After we didn’t really get the chance to catch up with Paddy earlier due to the proxomity of a half decent looking woman to John McCririck, I’ve had a quick look at his Twitter page. In possibly the only useful bit of information he’s given us all week, he says “just had breakfast at the track with Harry Findlay. He’s still very sweet on Denman” going on to reveal but I’m stuck between Barbers Shop and Kauto”. Asking one of them move politely should get you out of that little situation, Paddy.

9.25am The Morning Line Naps

Jim McGrath: Master Of Arts in the Triumph Hurdle
John Francome: Den Of Iniquity in the Albert Bartlett Hurdle
Ted Walsh: Juveigneur in the Foxhunter Chase
Christian Williams: Star De Mohaison in the Gold Cup
The Female Presenter (her name is Alice I’ve found out): Southwestern in the Foxhunter Chase

9.23am Paddy makes a fleeting appearance on the Morning Line. Big Mac gives him the elbow in favour of talking to a woman.

9.15am Morning Line tips for the Triumph Hurdle

Jim McGrath: Master Of Arts
John Francome: Trenchant or Simarian
Ted Walsh: Starluck
Christian Williams: Simarian

9.01am After a hell of a lot of analysis, the Morning Line team put forward their selections For the Gold Cup

Jim McGrath: Kauto Star with Exotic Dancer E/W
John Francome: Madison Du Berlais
Ted Walsh: Kauto Star
Christian Williams:
Kauto Star (but hopefully his ride) and Star De Mahaison E/W
Different female presenter to yesterday that I haven’t caught the name of: Star De Mahaison

8.45am We’re off to a flying start on the Hell Of A Horse Measurement Scale. Ted gives us a double to describe Kauto Star.

8.36am The going for Gold Cup Day is a bit like a marshmallow that’s gone ever so slightly stale - Good To Soft (good in places)

8.28am
If there is one thing I’ll be grateful for come the end of the Festival, it’s not having to type the word ‘count’ several times during the day. Every time I do it it’s like a game of typing roulette that could end in immediate dismissal with one wrong press of a key.

8.20am It’s only early doors, but already Nicky Henderson has been defending Zaynar, current favourite for the Triumph Hurdle. You can tell that he’s serious because he’s turned ‘crab’ into a verb. “A lot of people have been crabbing about him, but he’s a good horse,” he explains. You’ll hear no more crabbing from us.

Cheltenham Day 3 - Live

Posted by Aidan at 2:20pm March 12th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Racing, Sportsbook

Two down, two to go. We’re halfway through the Cheltenham odyssey and in keeping with the theme of the last few days, we’ll keep up to date with all the latest news, results and snipey remarks on our blog.

CURRENT “HELL OF A HORSE” COUNT: 2
(+ one “Hell Of A Fall”)

=====================
5.02pm It was a day for the British horses and the bookies alike as they regained ground they lost in yesterday’s carnage. The Hell Of A Horse Count was disappointingly low, but then again fancied Irish runners were few and far between. With the two short price favourites being beaten, it was a difficult day for the majority of punters but with Gold Cup day to come, remember the words of a famous rock band and Don’t Stop Believing.

There’ll be a lot more rambling interspersed with occassional tidbits of useful information tomorrow.

4.52pm Another kick in the pants for punters as the heavily backed Poker De Sivola fails to deliver in the last race of Day 3. Coming over the final fence it looked like 6 or 7 of them had a chance, but it was Character Building who took the honours.

The result
1st Character Building 16/1
2nd Pretty Star
3rd Newbray Prop
4th Bowleaze
Super extra bonus place 5th Butler’s Cabin

4.30pm
Kim Muir Chase Preview
Poker De Sivola has been well backed all day and since I was rather caught on the hop, the value has long since gone so I won’t be backing him. That’s not to say he won’t win, but I’d like a bigger price in a 24 runner handicap. Call me old fashioned, but I’d be looking for more bang for my guinea in a race like this. That’s why in short, I’m going for Le Duc who has won around Cheltenham before and will surely restore my faith in the course and distance form I so dearly cherish.

4.20pm It turns out that Paul Carberry suffered a punctured lung in his fall off Jaamid in the Jewson. That’s pretty nasty so obviously he won’t be riding again at the Fesitval. I once had a puncture, but I was able to fix it with a puncture repair kit and a couple of spoons. I’d imagine this puncture might be more difficult to repair.

4.15pm Channel 4 decide that watching Noel Edmonds prance around opening a load of boxes is more entertaining than the Kim Muir Chase. It’s over to Racing UK for the last race of the day and as always, you can watch live streaming online on the condition that you have a €/£5 bet on the race. What’s that you say? That’s a great deal. It certainly is, Mr. Imaginary Conversation.

4.08pm It’s called Ladies’ Day but they way things have gone today, it should probably be rebranded Venetia Williams Day. Something Wells and Ping Pong De Sivola provided a one-two for Williams to go along with the win of Kayf Aramis earlier in the afternoon.

The result
1st Something Wells 33/1
2nd Ping Pong De Sivola
3rd Notable D’Estruval
4th Three Mirrors
Super extra bonus place 5th Cossack Dancer

3.42pm
Freddie Williams Chase Preview
Right, the two big favourites of the day got turned over and it’s not going to get any better in the Freddie Williams Chase. Going against Ruby at the moment looks extremely foolish, but Oslot looks like he has just too much weight to carry in a really competitive race. Finger Onthe Pulse needs to improve but he’s knows his way around here and looks a solid bet.

3.30pm Finally, a winner! I had forgotten what that felt like. Kasbah Bliss fails to justify favouritism as Big Bucks claims the second Championship race of the Festival for the Walsh/Nicholls combination.

The result
1st Big Bucks 6/1
2nd Punchestowns
3rd Kasbah Bliss

3.05pm I quite like that Hokey Pokey market phrase I came up with yesterday and thankfully, the betting for the World Hurdle gives me a chance to wheel it out again and give myself a nice firm pat on the back. Kasbah Bliss drifted earlier, but the money has come for him again, Punchestowns has gone in and back out throughout the day and Big Bucks is doing something similar.

2.50pm A couple of jumping mistakes didn’t help Voy Por Ustedes and Imperial Commander held on to claim the Ryanair Chase.

The result
1st Imperial Commander 6/1
2nd Voy Por Ustedes
3rd Schindlers Hunt

2.32pm As promised, here’s some bitchiness about what the women are wearing.

OMG! What’s that fashion reporter on Channel 4 wearing??! How many Kevin Keegan perms had to die for that?

2.12pm Kayf Aramis takes the spoils in the Pertemps Final:

The result
1st Kayf Aramis 16/1
2nd Buena Vista
3rd Pennek
4th The Sliotar
Super extra bonus place 5th Green Mile

2.02pm They’ve been very scarce today, but Ted Walsh has provided us with our second Hell Of A Horse of the day.

1.54pm Paul Carberry has been stood down for the day after a bad fall in the Jewson and news not unrelated to that has reached the Live Blog desk.

Not content with having all the best horses, Paul Nicholls has to be one of the shredest judges in the business. We gave him a £500 Charity Bet and he chose to stick it on Chapotureon in the last race. That means there’s around £4,000 of our money heading to the Injured Jockeys’ Fund. Fair play Mr. Nicholls.

1.41pm
World Hurdle Preview
Weighing up all the evidence, you’d have to think Kasbah Bliss is an absolute banker for the World Hurdle. Course form, good recent form and no Inglis Drever to contend with - he has a lot in his favour - but the market moves have given the race a different complexion. The French horse hasn’t been massively popular while Big Bucks has been tipped up in many quarters as the value bet of the race and Punchestowns is being spoken about in glowing terms. It could be a tale of two jockeys because on one hand we’ve got the French jockey who has been criticised by various people for his style and on the other we’ve got Ruby who was imperious yesterday. Big Bucks offers enough value to make it worth opposing the favourite.

1.36pm What looked to be a tricky puzzle was made to look very simple as Chapoturgeon hacked up in the opener on Day 3.

The result
1st Chapoturgeon 8/1
2nd Isn’t That Lucky
3rd Cresent Island
4th Northern Alliance

1.15pm The market moves of earlier have continued in the betting for the Jewson Novices’ Chase. Isn’t That Lucky is in to 10/1 and Astarador is 20/1. At the top of the market, Kia Kaha is at 7/1 for the McCoy/McManus/O’Neill partnership.

12.27pm We get a “Hell Of A Fall” from that lad on Racing UK. It’s a slow day, so I’m counting it.

12.22pm Francois Doumen is interviewed on Racing UK about Kasbah Bliss. Sadly he doesn’t give us the holy grail of “Hell Of A Horses” - “Il Est un enfer de un cheval” - but he is extremely bullish about his runner. “My only regrest is that Inglis Drever isn’t running, because if he was, we’d kick his ass as well as all the others,” he pretty much said, although we may be paraphrasing to an certain extent.

11.57am If you’ve already picked out your winners for today, then why not try our brainteasing brainteaser, See It, Say It? See, you can’t think of a valid reason not to.

11.55am
Ryanair Chase Preview
On all the form, Voy Por Ustedes is the nailed on winner. He’s beaten most of these horses at various stages in the past and he’d have to seriously underperform to lose this one. Tidal Bay is a remarkable horse - in his 18 races, he hasn’t finished out of the places once, winning 10 times, but his remarkable consistency just reinforces the fact that he’s not quite good enough to displace Voy Por. If you’re looking for a bit more value, you could probably do worse than the straight forecast of Voy Por Ustedes to beat Tidal Bay (click on the Fore/Tricasts tab).

Watch what the experts have to say about Thursday at Cheltenham

11.43am In that exciting bit of breaking Journey news, I think I might have found where the idea for Cousin Vinny’s silks came from:

Cousin Journey

11.25am We have some exciting Journey related breaking news coming soon, but before that, something altogether more practical and less tight-panted, the Market Movers of the morning.

Jewson Chase
There have been a couple of slight changes to the market leades, but possibly the one to look out for is Isn’t That Lucky who has had some early support and has been trimmed from 12s into 11/1. Astrador has come in from 28/1 to 22/1 after a lot of each way money.

Pertemps Final
Don’t Push It has been trimmed to 13/2 from 7/1, but the big move has been for Ballydub who’s currently 15/2 after opening at 9/1 this morning. Galient is the outsider that has been well backed moving from 20s in to 16/1.

Ryanair Chase
Voy Por Ustedes was a short price favourite and he’s now a shorter price favourite, moving from 11/10 to EVS. Imperial Commander is going the other way, drifting from 5s out to 6/1.

World Hurdle
Kasbah Bliss was 5/4 earlier and he’s now available at 6/5.

Freddie Williams Chase
We assume it has nothing to do with Paddy tipping him up, but Notable D’estruval has been supported from 9/1 in to 8s with 2nd favourite, Clarified moving in the other direction.

Kim Muir Chase
It’s all about Poker De Sivola in the amateurs’ race with the David Pipe trained horse now at 9/2 after being as big as 6/1 this morning.

10.50am Choc Thornton has been to the medical centre and the course doctor has declared him fit to ride to day. In less widely reported news, the course hairdresser has declared his hair “Awesome” and fit to join Journey on their World Tour (that’s surely him playing the piano).

10.31am
Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle Preview
After starring blankly at the screen for several minutes, I still don’t have a clue [that reminds me, play our snazzy and not at all ripped off game, Cheltenham Katchphrase where you can win €100/£100 in Free Bets from about 1pm today]. The Pertemps Hurdle is full of good horses in bad form, bad horses in good form and a load of middling horses in middling form. I’m going to indulge in a spot of favourite backing and go for Don’t Push It because he wasn’t too far behind the highly rated Big Bucks last time out at Cheltenham.

10.10am Doubtless clean-shaven, freshly showered after a 5 mile early morning run with a spring in his step, a song in his heart and absolutely no trace of Guinness-breath, Paddy has emerged from the e-wilderness to announce his first tip of the day on Twitter:

Paddy Power is certain that Notable D’Estruval in the 4pm is the bet of the day . Currently 9/1 but not for long.

You have been warned.

9.56am
Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase Preview
Day 3 kicks off with an absolute minefield of a race. When you think about, that’s not the best of analogies, but what I’m trying to say is you’ll need to tread carefully when looking for a winner in the Jewson Handicap Chase. If there is a chance that you’ll lose a limb if you don’t pick the winner, then you’re probably betting more than you can afford. I’m going to abandon the course form criteria that hasn’t really worked anyway and plump for Exmoor Ranger, but as you’d expect, there are about 20 horses who have a genuine chance of winning this 20 runner race.

9.35am There is a God and he wants people to say “Hell Of A Horse”! Some lad on Racing UK gives us our first Hell Of A Horse today to describe Voy Por Ustedes.

9.26am Before I bring my summary of the Morning Line to a close, I’d like to give you my tip of the day that occured to me during the last ad break - The Duchess is crap, don’t watch it. It’s not just me being all macho, I was watching it with a girl and she thought exactly the same thing.

Morning Line Naps Of Day 2
Jim McGrath: Big Bucks in the World Hurdle
John Francome: Synchronised in the Pertemps Final
Ted Walsh: Northern Alliance in the Jewson
Barry Geraghty: Punchestowns in the World Hurdle
Lesley (she’s the female presenter and I didn’t include her selections before because I didn’t know her name): Shouldhavehadthat in the Kim Muir
Mike Cattermole: Voy Por Ustedes in the Ryanair Chase

Also, the Hell Of A Horse Count is dangerously low after quite a subdued performance from Ted.

9.22am Bookie Ellen Martin says that yesterday was terrible for her. You can tell she’s telling the truth because it looks like she’s been forced to wear one half of those cow costumes you see in really bad am-dram productions [it's Ladies' Day today, so I'm going to be bitchy about what people are wearing - more so than yesterday]. She says Voy Por Ustedes is the one to avoid for today.

9.14am Awwwww! A bit like a child being told there’s no such thing as the Tooth Bunny Claus, Ted is momentarily deflated as he tells everyone to keep an eye for Hills Of Aran in the Pertemps Final only to be told he’s a non runner. There’s a flurry of tips as the Morning Line team rocket through their selctions for the Jewson Novices’ Chase and the Pertemps Final Hurdle:

Jewson Chase Selections:
Jim McGrath: Kia Kaha
John Francome: Chapoturgeon
Ted Walsh: Northern Alliance
Barry Geraghty: Tranquil Sea

Pertemps Final Selections:
Jim McGrath: Synchronised
John Francome: Synchronised
Ted Walsh: P’tit Fute
Barry Geraghty: Galient

8.57am The Morning Line preview of the Ryanair Chase was extremely brief and despite good conditions, we’ve yet to hear our first “Hell Of A Horse” of the day. Voy Por Ustedes does a Slumdog Millionaire with a clean sweep.

Ryanair Chase Selections:
Jim McGrath: Voy Por Ustedes with Tidal Bay the main danger
John Francome: Voy Por Ustedes with Our Vic the main danger
Ted Walsh: Voy Por Ustedes
Barry Geraghty: Voy Por Ustedes

[WE'VE DONE THAT ON TIME SO INSERT YOUR OWN ANNOYING BUGLE SOUND HERE]

8.50am The betting for the World Hurdle would suggest that the race is there for Kasbah Bliss to take, but oddly enough, none of the Morning Line panel tip him up for the big race:

World Hurdle Selections:
Jim McGrath: Big Bucks - each way value
John Francome: Punchestowns
Ted Walsh: Big Bucks
Barry Geraghty: Punchestowns

Read what another bunch of experts have to say about the World Hurdle

8.42am Barry Geraghty reveals that he wouldn’t have gotten off Punjabi in the Champion Hurdle, even if the chance to ride Binocular came up. He’s a good liar.

8.32am Officially - and quite possibly unofficially - the going for today is good to soft.

8.20am Choc Thornton was stood down yesterday [I know it's bad grammar, but it's jockey speak] for getting “a kick in the kidney” which doesn’t sound nice. He’s back today and his best chance looks to be Voy Por Ustedes in the Ryanair Chase. He’s not the most straightforward of horses and you can’t switch off when riding him says Choc as “one day I did relax on him and ended up on my arse.”

Cheltenham Katchphrase Day 3

Posted by Aidan at 1:04pm March 12th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Cheltenham Katchphrase, Katchphrase, Racing, Sportsbook 16 Comments

We had believed that the first couple of days of Cheltenham Katchphrase would send people on a wild goose chase of Da Vinci Code proportions, but both competitions came to a disappointingly premature end.

Well no more! Today we’ve got a right tricky one that will require all your cunning.

Usual rules apply. One guess per person per square revealed, previous winners can’t enter because we ain’t allowing any Man Utd style dominance of all competitions and any other rules that we had in other days that I’ve forgotten at the moment.

In words that I’ve become all too used to throughout, we’ve finished prematurely C Cairns guessed right with Dark Horse

Cheltenham Day 2 - Live

Posted by Aidan at 3:00pm March 11th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Horse Racing Tips, Racing, Sportsbook 1 Comment

Today we’re all set to witness pure perfection in motion. It’s a day for sitting back and enjoying unadultered greatness. That’s enough about our Cheltenham Day 2 blog, Master Minded is also running.

WEDNESDAY’S ‘HELL OF A HORSE’ COUNT: 4

===============================

8.41am Barry Geraghty says he wouldn’t have gotten off Punjabi in the Champion Hurdle even if the chance to ride Binocular came along. He’s a good liar.

5.42pm Paddy hasn’t Twitted for a while now, but presumably his next update will be along the lines of “going to a dark room to lick my wounds.” Sometimes the phrase “an absolute hosing” just doesn’t cover it. “An absolute hosing” doesn’t do justice to the kicking we got today. What a day for punters - Ruby and his hat-trick, Master Minded defending his title and Cooldine and Dunguib looking like potential superstars. Ireland lead the cross-channel competition with eight wins to five and the Hell Of A Horse count limped in at a grand of 4, despite some excellent Hell Of A Horse conditions.

Tomorrow is another day and if it’s anything like today we’ll be paying extra attention to the jobs’ section of the newspaper. Adios for now.

5.22pm The Bumper was different in one respect - namely it was all over coming into the straight, but completely predictable in another respect as the Irish raiding party domianted affairs. Dunguib put in a superb display to claim the honours.

The result:
1st Dunguib 9/2
2nd Some Present
3rd Rite Of Passage
Super Extra Bonus Place - 4th Quel Espirit

5.10pm A check on our favourite Twit tells it’s own story. Full of himself after tipping Well Chief in the Champion Chase without Master Minded, Paddy confidently twits Paddy is happy to silence his critics about “never taking a bet from a bookie”. Miss Serenne wins the next at Chelt.

That will explain the poor performance. Apologies to all her backers.

5.05pm In what’s going to lazily double up as a preview for the Champion Bumper, Rite Of Passage has been heavily backed all day and there’s also been constant support of Dunguib. The top 9 in the betting are Irish, so that looks to be the only certainty of the race. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Shinrock Paddy could do something.

4.47pm As they approached the final hurdle, the majority of Paddy Power staff we’re no doubt in the process of googling ‘jobs’ but Alexander Severus faded and Silk Affair took advantage to win and in the process keep the company in business. The British claw one back which leaves it at 7-5 to the Irish.

The result:
1st Silk Affair 11/1
2nd Ski Sunday
3rd Saticon
4th Alexander Severus

4.25pm The going has changed ever so slightly, so slightly that I wasn’t even going to mention it. The going is now Good to Soft, as opposed to Good to Soft (Soft in places).

4.15pm Channel 4 coverage comes to an end for day 2 and aside from the fact that our Hell Of A Course Count is in danger of not moving for the rest of the day, it also means we have to make the switch to Racing UK. Never fear if you don’t have a satellite, a TV or indeed satellite TV, because you can Bet & Watch with us as long as it’s a bet of €5/£5 or more. You wouldn’t walk into a coffee shop just so you could sit there and buy nothing, so that’s the angle we’re working with that little arrangement. You scratch our back, we’ll give you a cappucino … er … we’ll give you a live steam of the next couple of races. Or if you’re too credit-crunched for that, our text commentary and Cheltenham radio is free, but you’re punishment is having to use your brain a bit more.

4.06pm It was a return to form for me and what I mean by return to form is my uncanny ability to pick the horse that’s going to finish 2nd. It’s victory for Nineteeth Minute who kept going right until the end to deny Mirage Dore.

The result:
1st Nineteeth Minute 14/1
2nd Mirage Dore
3rd Pause And Clause
4th Star Of Angels
Super Extra Bonus Place - 5th Kawagino

3.54pm
Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle
Ruby Walsh has given the bookies a right kicking so far today but I can guarantee it won’t happen in the Fred Winter Hurdle. We might still get a kicking, but at least it won’t be by the boots of Ruby. Being a race for the juveniles, there’s not a lot of course form to go on and given that it’s been f-all use to us today, maybe that’s not a bad thing. Completely abandoning any logic, I’m going to go for Balzaccio because it sounds a bit like an Italian swear word. And he’s a half decent horse.

3.30pm Marodima’s hijinks at the start quite literally only delayed the inevitable as Master Minded cruised to his second Champion Chase. The margin of victory wasn’t as impressive as last year, thanks mainly to an eyecatching return to action for Well Chief.

The result:
1st Master Minded 4//11
2nd Well Chief
3rd Petit Robin

3.17pm Twist Magic doesn’t look too happy and throws Sam Thomas off. In fairness, that’s not all that difficult.

3.05pm The market isn’t telling us anything we don’t already know with Master Minded at the 1/3 mark. Briareus has been the subject of consistent support each way and in the Betting Without while Scotsirish has been backed in from a big price to a not quite so big price.

2.49pm Cooldine makes two in a row for the Walsh/Mullins combo and much more importantly, Ruby gives us our fourth “hell of a horse” of the day.

The result:
1st Cooldine 9/4
2nd Horner Wood
3rd Massini’s Maguire

2.27pm The latest win for Willie Mullins has made Cooldine even more popular than he already was. He has been well backed all morning and at the moment he’s in to 5/2 to win the RSA Chase. Sir Alex Ferguson’s What A Friend is available at 7/1 which is the same price as you’ll get for Cristiano Ronaldo not to throw himself to the ground theatrically during tonight’s match.

2.18pm Darragh guessed “Hell Of A Horse” in our Cheltenham Katchphrase game and as the counter has remained static since about 9 this morning, it’s going towards the grand total. It’s wrong though.

2.13pm The smart money was indeed smart as the heavily backed Mikael d’Haguenet oblliged to give Willie Mullins his second winner of the Festival. Karabak claimed the runners up spot and first the first time in his career, Diamond Harry has to taste the bitter sting of defeat. Don’t worry, he’ll get used to it.

The result in full:
1st Mikael d’Haguenet 11/4
2nd Karabak
3rd Diamond Harry

2pm The betting for the Ballymore Properties Hurdle is a hokey-pokey market. I’ve just made that up and what I mean is all the horses are going in, out, in, out and shaking it all about. There have been some fluctuations but it’s pretty much as it was earlier in the day.

1.39pm Some of the well backed horses tumbled out of contention in the National Hunt Chase, but it was Tricky Trickster who benefited to claim victory in the marathon.

The result in full:
1st Tricky Trickster 11/1
2nd Drumconvis
3rd Nine De Sivola

Non runner No. 18 Wichita Lineman

1.15pm Don’t worry if you backed a horse that ran a stinker yesterday because in some measure of revenge and judging by what I had for lunch, they’re being served up in the Paddy Power canteen at the moment. It’s back to the racing now and with the National Hunt Chase soon to kick off day 2, Coe is being heavily backed.

12.41pm The kiss of death for one of my selections as Paddy tips up Forest Leaves in the first via his Twitter page.

12.38pm
(A refreshingly brief) Coral Cup Preview
Thank God we’re paying 5 places in the Coral Cup this race is tougher than a Chuck Norris/Mr. T lovechild. There are a few horses with what looks like good form but to cut a long story short, Mirage Dore has a great chance at a big price. He’s carrying an absolute featherweight, the amateur takes a further three pounds off and he beat a good horse very well on his last outing.

12.32pm It’s back to the Channel 4 coverage and Ted Walsh must have delivered the chocolates because he has ditched the Milk Tray Man gear for his Sunday best.

12.15pm If you’ve got a few moments to spare whilst picking out your winners, why not have a go at our legally different Cheltenham Katchphrase game. Just say what your optical sense organs take in, send the information to your primary visual cortex and build an image of what it is.

12.01pm
Queen Mother Champion Chase Preview
We can take it as given that Master Minded has this one in the bag. We paid out on him several weeks ago and the biggest question is who’ll finish second. The problem is horses that could possibly get in the same area code as Master Minded realise it’s still nowhere near enough and will take their chances in races they might actually win. We’re left with a field of reasonable horses, none of which stand out as an obvious runner up. Well Chief hasn’t run in a couple of weeks short of two years and no matter how he’s been trained at home, it will be hard to make a successful reappearance in a Champion Chase. Petit Robin didn’t get up the hill on his last visit to Cheltenham, Big Zeb’s jumping is sketchy at best and he won’t get away with any mistakes today. Based on a 6th place in a Champion Hurdle and finishing 32 lengths behind Kauto Star in the King George over Christmas, Briareus looks the most likely candidate to cling on to Master Minded’s coattails.

See what the experts have to say

11.15am There has been plenty of activity in the markets so far this morning, some more surprising than others. Parsons Pistol, one of Pricewise’s selections, is now in to 9/1 for the National Hunt Chase. Willie Mullins’ runners have been been the subject of support for both the Ballymore Properties Hurdle and the RSA Chase. Mikael D’Haugenet is now 11/4 from 3/1 whilst Cooldine is 10/3 after being 4/1 earlier this morning. No-one can oppose Master Minded in the Champion Chase, but Briareus has been trimmed to 16/1 from 20/1 after each way money. Polomoche has been clipped for the Coral Cup, going from 8s in to 13/2. The betting for the Fred Winter is particularly lively with Alexander Severus backed into 9/2 from 5s, Higgins Boy cut to 12s from 14s and Woodfall Treasure cut from 25/1 to 18/1. The market says the Champion Bumper is going to Ireland but not Willie Mullins as Rite Of Passage is now 7/2 from 9/2 while Sicilian Secret is on the drift.

10.55am
RSA Chase Preview
For my money, Maicon is the best right back in the world. Switch Ronaldo to the right wing and he should have a lot more joy. Santon should have be renamed Santa for the amount of space he gifted Ronaldo in the 1st leg at the San Siro and he carved out chances that Man Utd really should have taken. Mourinho will persist with the 8-0-2 formation that sees four defensive midfielders line up just in front of four defenders whilst Ibrahimovic will wander around aimlessly, looking bemused when every half-arsed flick doesn’t end up in the back of the net. Make the pitch big and you’ll reduce the effect of packing the midfield and you should win easily enough.

That bit of advice was for Sir Alex Ferguson by way of consolation for not winning the RSA Chase with What A Friend. There are just a couple of holes in his form that make me think he’s not great value. He won well at Cheltenham in December, but there was no pace in that race and he might struggle if they go a good gallop in this one. Cooldine is all the rage after Forpadydeplasterer gave his form a boost by winning the Arkle, but the fact that he hasn’t had a run at Cheltenham is my big concern. It’s a really open race, but I think Gone To Lunch can win it. In what has inadvertently become a daily New Zealand bit that gives me a chance to mention Flight Of The Conchords, I’d keep an eye out for The Market Man. He’s a talented horse that has suffered from injuries in the past and it looks like this race has been targeted to confirm his Mickey Rourke-esque return to form. He’s an outsider, but could run a big race at a big price – if that’s what you’re in to.

Man Utd and What A Friend Double

10.22am It’s interesting to note (well, I think it’s interesting at least, but I probably need to get a hobby) that Barry Geraghty is available at 11/4 in our Top Festival Jockey betting, behind Ruby at EVS. He currently leads the standings with two wins plus he’s got some good rides on well fancied horses today and a couple of live outsiders that could get in the frame.

10.15am Paddy’s been strangely quiet of late and a quick look at his Twitter page solves a mystery that had very little mystery about it:

“Another fine day…looking through the card, the Guinness always tastes better the morning after the opening day! :o)”
13 minutes ago from web

9.58am Willie Mullins is going to the focus of attention for a lot of people today. After his honest assessment of Cousin Vinny’s state of mind yesterday, it’s worth listening to his somewhat cautious views on Mikael D’Haguenet – “He’s in great shape, but the worry is the dry ground. He’s a big horse and a lot will depend on how he comes down the hill. Ruby won’t be asking him for much then, but he can ask him for all he wants after that.”
Mullins reckons that Cooldine is his best chance of a winner on day 2 and even with a typically strong hand in the Champion Bumper thinks that Rite Of Passage and Dunguib for Dermot Weld and Phillip Fenton have real chances. “If one of mine finishes ahead of Dermot’s horse, then we’ll probably win.”

9.42am
Ballymore Properties Hurdle Preview
The betting suggests it’s between the three market leaders in the Ballymore Properties Hurdle and rather than show any semblance of individuality, I’ll blithely conform. Of the three I’m going to plump for Diamond Harry because (a) he’s won over course and distance twice (b) he’s the best value of the three market leaders and (c) oh yeah, he’s unbeaten in all six of his starts. If any horse is going to upset the leading triumvirate, then it could be Junior for the Alan King/Robert Thornton combination that has been very successful at the Festival in recent years.

Read what the experts have to say, including Timmy Murphy who rides Diamond Harry

9.24am Morning Line Naps Of Day 2
Derek Thompson: Can’t Buy Time in the National Hunt Chase
Jim McGrath: Dunguib in the Champion Bumper
John Francome: Briareus Each Way in the Champion Chase
Mick Fitzgerald: Cooldine in the RSA Chase
Ted Walsh: Mikael D’Haguenet in the Ballymore Properties Hurdle
Mike Cattermole: Karabak in the Ballymore Properties Hurdle

9.07am Yaaay! He kept us waiting for a while put Ted comes up trumps with a double “hell of a horse” when talking about Mikael D’haguenet in the Ballymore Properties Hurdle.

8.57am The consensus is that Master Minded just can’t be beaten in the Champion Chase. That’s not the most groundbreaking revealation you’ll hear today - or maybe it is, maybe today will be a bit of a write-off in terms of groundbreaking revealations - so the Morning Line team look at the Betting Without Master Minded market (click on the ‘All Markets’ tab). Ted thinks Big Zeb can claim the runners up honours whilst Petit Robin gets the vote from Mick Fitzgerald.

8.54am
National Hunt Chase
A couple of short heads denied a couple of my selections victory at some nice prices yesterday (Kalahari King and Maljimar), but I’m going to keep faith with horses that have ran well at Cheltenham before. That’s eff all use to us in the National Hunt Chase as none of the runners have particularly excelled at the course in the past. On top of that, its wide open over four miles. For no other reason than he’s got some solid if unspectacular form and he should see out the trip, I’m going to plump for Forest Leaves who’s trained by Edward O’Grady, a man familiar with the winners’ enclosure at the Festival.

8.37am It’s confirmed that Wichita Lineman is getting a well deserved break. He’s a non runner.

8.35am All because the lady loves … some useful information, the going at Cheltenham is again good to soft, soft in places.
8.31am It’s time for the Morning Line and aside from previewing the races, Ted Walsh looks like he’s about to deliver a box of Milk Tray.

8.25am
As the old saying goes, the early bird catches the best value about a Pricewise tip. The Racing Post tipster has put up Parsons Pistol in the National Hunt Chase as one of his selections for today and already the early birds have been gobbling up the juicy worminess. Strangely enough, after all his exertions yesterday Wichita Lineman is second favourite for the race, but surely he’ll get taken out of the race shortly.

8.10am It’s just come to my attention that Brian O’Conner, the excellent racing correspondent with the Irish Times tipped up the first three home in the Champion Hurdle. Obviously it would have been worth paying more attention yesterday as the spot on prediction of picking Punjabi to beat Celestial Halo and Binocular paid a pretty penny - a pretty penny being exactly 463/1. Still though - Punjabi, who’d have thunk it? For what it’s worth his tricast for the Champion Chase is 1. Master Minded, 2. Petit Robin and 3. Twist Magic.

Cheltenham Katchphrase Day 2

Posted by Rob at 11:46am March 11th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Cheltenham Katchphrase, Competitions, Katchphrase, Sportsbook 31 Comments

Win €/£100 in Free Bets

As with most things we set our frazzled minds to, yesterday’s Cheltenham Katchphrase game wasn’t as well thought out as it really should have been and was in very real danger of turning into somthing of a farce. To avoid such pitfalls today I’m enforcing a few rules. There’s only one guess per person per square revealed, we can’t have one person having a hundred guesses before any one else even makes one (not naming any names, dave) . You can only win once over the four days, so sorry joe but we have to give everyone else a chance. I think this is all pretty fair and other rules will be made up if necessary.

So on to today’s installment. It’s pretty simple really, I’ll start revealing a new square every half hour or so from 1pm and you just say what you see. The first person to get it right wins €/£100 in free bets but if we get to the end and no one has the right answer then, and only then, will it become a free for all and Dave can have as many guesses as he wants. Good luck guys.

We have a winner. Today Dave Jones’ quality over quantity approach has won him the free bets. Congratulations Dave. One Trick Pony it is, I think we’re going to have to start making these a bit tougher.

Cheltenham Day 1 - Live

Posted by Aidan at 3:30pm March 10th, 2009

Category: Cheltenham 2009, Racing, Sportsbook 4 Comments

To lazily rehash the metaphor we’ve been using for the last few weeks, it’s Christmas for adults today and we don’t mean it in the cheesy plot of a porno way. We’ll keep you up to date with the major events of the day on our fantabulous blog.

CURRENT “HELL OF A HORSE” COUNT: 3

==================

5:02pm So that’s it for day 1 at Cheltenham. The vital statistics are four wins for Ireland, two for the British, a rather disappointing three “hell of a horses” - a total we’ll hopefully surpass tomorrow with many more hell of a horses taking their chances - and Barry Geraghty has stormed to the top of the Leading Jockey table with two wins. Now we also know that Quevega doesn’t have any trouble handling Cheltenham, Binocular struggles to get up the hill and Steve (unemployed drug user, 21) isn’t the father of Sharon’s (local bike, 19) baby.

Much like Sharon, it’s back to the drawing board to find some potential candidates for tomorrow.

4:48pm: It’s a shame that Channel 4 weren’t showing the Mares’ Hurdle because it was hands down the most convincing performance of the day and quite possibly the showcasing of a serious contender for next year’s Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins makes up for earlier disappointment with a trouncing of the field.

1st - Quevega
2nd - United
3rd - Aura About You

4:30pm: The top four in the market have all come in for support in the Mares’ Hurdle. willie Mullins may have started his Cheltenham day with disappointment, but he could finish it in style if the market is anything to go by as the money keeps coming for Quevega.

4:18pm: If you think the Cross Country Chase is something that strings things out for as long as possible only for the result to be pretty much what we knew was going to happen all along, then Deal Or No Deal is a million times worse. Channel 4’s coverage of Cheltenham has finished for the day and now it’s over to Racing UK for the Mares’ Hurdle. If you don’t have Racing UK, never fear because you can Bet And Watch online when you stake €/£5 or more. That was more corporate than I’m comfortable with so em … boobs.

4:11pm: It was one of the more sedate Cross Country Chases but I’m not too bothered because I’m just glad to get a winner on the board. Nina Carberry makes it three Cross Country Chases on the bounce with a superbly judged ride on and Enda Bolger maintains his stranglehold on the genre.

1st - Garde Champetre 7/2
2nd - L’Ami
3rd - Drombeag
4th - A New Story

3:55pm: L’Ami continues to be well backed and Headsontheground is the least popular of the Bolger runners in the Cross Country Chase. Dix Villez outsmarted them last time out and maybe people think he’ll do it again because there’s been a lot of support for him. Let the craziness begin.

3:50pm:
David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle
Right, I’ve been trying to put it off all day, but finally I’ve to try and find a winner in the Mares’ Hurdle. Quevega looks to be well in with the weights on account in comparison with a couple of her main rivals and a worthy favourite, but the lack of a run at Cheltenham is again a concern. Gaspara has run with great credit on several occasions it what looks to be a wide open race, she could be the value bet.

3:32pm: The fact that they all walked up the hill made for another superb finish but that won’t be much comfort for backers of Binocular who just found the finish line came too soon. Against the odds Barry Geraghty was the jockey to claim the quickfire double.

1st - Punjabi 22/1
2nd - Celestial Halo 17/2
3rd - Binocular 6/4

Non runner: No. 20 Sizing Europe

3:11pm: Tony McCoy will be hoping to land a quickfire double as he takes the ride on Binocular in the Champion Hurdle and it looks like plenty of people think he’ll do it because he’s now been backed in to 11/8. Meanwhile, I’ll be trying to shake off the habit of getting my selections beaten by a head on the line.

2:50pm: He was practically back in his horsebox half way around but from nowhere, Tony McCoy gave Wichita Lineman a stunning ride to lift him up the hill, which somewhat ruined my tip of Maljimar who finished second @ 14/1.

The result in full
1st - Wichita Lineman 5/1
2nd - Maljimar 14/1
3rd - Nenuphar Collonges 17/2
4th - Dear Villez 16/1
Extra Place Value 5th - The Sawyer 33/1

2:40pm: Some dreadful pronounciation from the Channel 4 team hasn’t stopped Cailin Alainn from tumbling in price. It’s pronounced “call ian, awl ian” and means beautiful girl in Irish

2:33pm: The support for Nenuphar Collonges is the main story in the betting for the William Hill Trophy - hey, we said it was the main story, not a particularly interesting story. Wichita Lineman has also been heavily backed all day with Golden Flight going the other way.

2:27pm: If you’ve already picked out your bets for the next race and you don’t have to pretend to look busy then you’re probably a Paddy Power employee why not have a go at our just for office pride game, Say It See It

2.11pm: What it lacked in quality it more than made up for in excitement. The favourite went early and Forpadydeplaster took advantage to make it two nil to the Irish capturing a thrillier of an Arkle by a head from Kalahari King.

The result in full
1st - Forpadydeplasterer 8/1
2nd - Kalahari King 8/1
3rd - Planet Of Sound 10/1

Non runner: No. 11 I’m So Lucky

1:55pm: No sooner than the muck has settled on the racetrack, but we’re looking for to the next race. It’s the Arkle and there has been sustained money for Kalahari King and whilst the top two in the market - Tatenen and Calgary Bay - are drifting more than the Littlest Hobo.

1:37pm: It’s an Irish winner in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, but not the one everyone expected. Paul Carberry gave Go Native one of those signature cool and calm rides to claim victory for Noel Meade.

The result in full
1st - Go Native 12/1
2nd - Medermit 12/1
3rd - Somersby 40/1

Non runner: No.1 Aachen

1:22pm “Hell of a horse” #3. Again about Cousin Vinny.

1:14pm: Booby McCririck says that Cousin Vinny looks “grotty”.

1:10pm: With the Supreme Novices’ within touching distance, all Cousin Vinny’s troubles have been forgotten as he’s back into 5/2, around the price he’s been for much of the build up to Cheltenham. Torphichen and Kempes are on the drift.

1pm: If there was anymore hype needed for the Binocular bandwagon, then his jockey, Tony McCoy provided it by saying “he’s a better horse than last year.” Echoing the thoughts of a large part of the betting public, he says “the hardest part will be getting a clear run around. If he can get that, then hopefully he’ll be too hard to stop.”

12:20pm: There’s been a couple of interesting moves in the betting. In the Arkle, Planet of Sound has been backed in from 11/1 to 8/1 and although there are question marks about Cousin Vinny, there’s little worries about another one of Willlie Mullins’ leading fancies as Golden Silver has been backed in to 12/1 from 16/1. The afforementioned Cousin Vinny is currently 11/4 after earlier drifting as far out as 3/1.

12:10pm:
Cross Country Chase
To state the obvious, you can’t look beyond the Enda Bolger horses in the Cross Country Chase. It’s my personal highlight of day 1, mainly for the pure unadulterated craziness of it all. At some stage I reckon there was a conversation along the lines of:
“Why would we want to make the horses jump over a little fence and hedge?”
“Er … maybe one hot summer’s day they’ll really want a 99 and they’ll need to jump over the garden hedge just before the ice-cream van drives off.”
“I like it, let’s run with it.”
However it came about, it’s a fantastic spectacle and one that Bolger is simply impossible to ignore in. Four of the leading contenders in the betting are from his stable and Garde Champetre is the pick over L’Ami, simply by virtue of the fact that he’s done it all before. He’s got to carry more weight than his stablemate, but that will have less of an effect as long as the rain stays away. Davy Russell had the smarts to take the shortest route around at the Open Meeting on Dix Villez, but given that it was such an obvious advantage, you’d wonder if he can beat them without that ace up his sleeve.

11:35am: In the absence of some actual news, I’’ll just remind you that we’ve got some pretty snazzy Cheltenham Wallpaper that serves the dual purpose of pimping up your desktop and listing all the races at Cheltenham.

And after being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, Paddy Power is now a Twit. Oh, and he’s also on Twitter.

11:15am:
Champion Hurdle Preview
The name of Katchit has been ringing around my head for the last few days. Rather than reveal that to our loyal blog readers, I should probably seek some sort of psychiatric help, but as bad as his form has been this season, he’s such a Cheltenham horse that I can’t bring myself to discount him entirely. Some horses just love the place and as bad as they’ve been elsewhere for the rest of the season, something just clicks when they get to the hill. If Binocular doesn’t run his race, Katchit has the heart to defend his Champion Hurdle. I’d love if any of Hardy Eustace, Brave Inca or even Harchibald got in the frame and even allowing for the heart dictating over the head, I think Hardy is great value for a place, for similar reasons to Katchit.

Cat asks “anyone rate sentry duty today???” in our comment section and even allowing for the dubious punctuation, it’s a good question. For my money, Sentry Duty has flown under radar a bit and is certainly open to improvement, but the big concern is that he’s done most of his winning on flat tracks and hasn’t handled the undulations of either Cheltenham or Punchestown particularly well.

See what the experts have to say

10:52am: In a slight diversion from the racing, Sharon (local bike, 19) says that Steve (unemployed drug user, 21) is the father of her child on the Jeremy Kyle Show. We’d go a short price that he’s not, but the Paternity Stakes look wide open. Either way, it’s a dead cert that Jeremy will shout at both of them and make them feel a little worse about their already not especially fantastic lives.
Anyhoo, back to the racing and speaking of dead certs [see what I’ve done there] the money is coming for Binocular. Here are some of the market moves we’ve seen this morning.

Made In Taipan (Arkle) – was 25/1 backed in to 20/1
Wichita Lineman (William Hill Trophy) – was 7/1 backed in to 6/1
Binocular (Champion Hurdle) – was 15/8 backed in to 7/4
L’Ami (Cross Country Chase) – was 9/4 backed in to 2/1
Pass Me By (Cross Country Chase) – was 33/1 backed in to 20/1

10:40am:
William Hill Trophy
At the risk of undermining the very horses for courses theory I’ve espoused for the last few Cheltenhams, it doesn’t rule out a lot of contenders for the William Hill Trophy. Again, lots of the leading fancies have been there, won that, got the t-shirt. It’s hard to draw a line through a lot of the market leaders, but based on little more than a gut feeling that might have been caused by some dodgy cod last night and an aversion to backing favourites, I’d be looking towards Maljimar. His last run was in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November and although that seventh placed finish wouldn’t fill you with confidence, it looks like he’s been put away with this race in mind. He runs off a nice weight and he looks a very big price.

10:22am: Edward O’Grady runs Bringbackthebiff in the Arkle. Rather unusually, he’s a horse from New Zealand who’s trying to make it big in the northern hemisphere - so he’s a bit like Flight Of the Conchords. A touch unfairly, that would make Edward O’Grady the Murray Hewitt of this analogy. Anyway, O’Grady says he’s a “lovely horse and a nice jumper” and reckons he could get into the frame at a big price (currently 33/1). Is it business time for Bringbackthebiff?

9:51am:
Arkle Preview
The course and distance form that I look for at Cheltenham doesn’t make it much easier to pick a winner in the Arkle. Most of the main contenders have won at Prestbury Park so we’re right back at square one – that’s if we ever left square one. Of the main contenders, Calgary Bay looks to be a better value bet than Tatenen. Kalahari King wasn’t a million miles behind some good horses in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last year and although he hasn’t got that course win in the bank, he seems to handle Cheltenham well. He hasn’t done much wrong since and is open to improve.

Read the experts’ opinions on the Arkle here

9:24am: John McCririck drooling over Ellen Martin briefly sparks fears that our cornflakes will make a reappearance, but thankfully they don’t. In a shameless bit of Sex Sells marketing that we wish we thought of first, Ellen’s lay of the day is Binocular in the Champion Hurdle. She’s not basing this decision on form or logic, just that he’s a short price and needs to be taken on, which in itself is a type of logic.
The Morning Line NAPs of Day 1
Jim McGrath - Planet Of Sound in the Arkle
John Francome - Binocular in the Champion Hurdle
Ted Walsh - L’Ami in the Cross Country Chase
Colm Murphy - Cousin Vinny
Thommo - Torphichen in the Supreme Novices

9:13am: Willie Mullins tried to clear up the Cousin Vinny mystery. Speaking to the Morning Line, he revealed that the horse travelled fine, but hasn’t eaten or drank well since arriving at the course. The horse rode out “alright” this morning and there was never any question of pulling the horse out of the race. There you have it straight from the trainer’s mouth. The doubts haven’t done much to dissuade the panel as they put up their selections for the Supreme Novices‘.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle selections from Morning Line Team
Jim McGrath - Cousin Vinny
John Francome - Cousin Vinny, but Red Moloney is the best jumper in the race
Ted Walsh - Cousin Vinny will “eat them”
Colm Murphy - Cousin Vinny
Thommo - Torphichen

9:06am: Our second “hell of a horse” of the day from Ted. This time it’s for Cousin Vinny

9:05am: Ruby wasn’t exactly effusive when assessing Celestial Halo’s chances of upsetting Binocular in the Champion Hurdle. “He’s in good form. He wants it a bit slower to take the speed out of Binocular.”
Right so, we don’t need the Da Vinci Code to work out he’s not all that confident of winning the Champion Hurdle, but he does say that he had a very tough choice to make about which horse to ride in Arkle. Ruby rides Tantenen, but cites Golden Silver as a “huge price” whilst Ted and Jon Francome both pick out Original as the value bet.

8:50am: The Morning Line Brains’ Trust are debating the Champion Hurdle and the consensus is that Binocular can’t be beaten. Colm Murphy goes as far as to say that if he wins this year’s Champion Hurdle he can win it “for the next couple of years.” Murphy saddles Brave Inca for the race and the 2006 winner “comes alive at Cheltenham” so he can’t be ruled out at a big price despite his advancing years. Ted Walsh also gives us his first “hell of a horse”, using it to describe Captain Cee Bee, the horse that beat Binocular at last year’s Festival.

Champion Hurdle selections from Morning Line Team
Jim McGrath - Binocular, Brave Inca great E/W value
John Francome - Ashkazar
Ted Walsh - Binocular, Brave Inca great E/W value
Colm Murphy - Binocular
Thommo - Osana

8:45am:
Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Preview
There were reports that Cousin Vinny didn’t travel across the Irish Sea particularly well and hasn’t settled at Cheltenham. The fact that Willie Mullins gave these reports tends to make you believe them. With the races he’s won and the winning course form that’s about the only doubt you could have about him in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. He’s still the most obvious winner, but if you’re looking for a touch more by way of value, you do worse than having a small bet on Golan Way. He’s won over course and distance and should handle the ground. Some of the other leading contenders haven’t had a run at Cheltenham and you’re never quite sure how they’ll handle it.

8:20am: In possibly the most relevant and least rambling piece of information you’ll find on this blog for most of the day, the going at Cheltenham for Day 1 is officially good to soft, soft in places.

8:10am: It says a lot about modern technology that the money can come flooding in from punters as they merrily munch on their cornflakes. Already there’s been a lot of money for Wichita Lineman in the William Hill Trophy.

Win £/€100 in Free Bets

There’s not really a whole lot to it. We show you a picture and you have to tell us what it’s supposed to represent. The exciting part is that we don’t show to you it all in one go. Oh, no. We’re dragging this bad boy out. So, in a manner completely unlike any tv show you think you might have seen before, we’ll reveal one square at a time while a little yellow robot and Roy…no wait that’s not us…we’ll just be revealing a new square every half an hour or so (it is Cheltenham today) until someone correctly guesses and wins themselves £/€100 in free bets. First person to guess correctly wins.

So just say what you see. Damn is that copyrighted? We’ll go check with legal and you try and win yourself some free bets.

Also to give everyone a chance at having a go it’s now limited to one guess per person per square shown. So you have to have a proper think about it.

We Have a winner!! Horse Play it is and the €100 goes to joekeenan. I’ll be back tomorrow with another, hopefully more difficult, Cheltenham Katchphrase.

On Thursday it’s all about two big races - the Ryanair and the World Hurdle. Don’t expect me to call the handicaps at this stage, although I have heard good things about Clarified, who may end up in the Freddie Williams Plate and is currently 8/1 for that race. (more…)
