Paddy has now refunded over €900k to punters this January on this special alone.

Paddy Power’s generosity in refunding all losers in two races on every Saturday in January ended up with the universe’s most popular bookie giving back a grand total of just over €900,000 in cold, hard cash after today he refunded €200k to 20,000 customers.

Punters in Paddy’s shops and online, who were aware of the offer but did not know which two races until as soon as the races begun, got their money back on the Murphy Group Handicap Chase (1.15pm Cheltenham) and the lingfieldpark.co.uk Handicap (3.10pm Lingfield) this afternoon.

€115,000 was refunded to 13,000 punters on the former, while €85k was given back to 7,000 backers on the contest, resulting in a grand total refund of €200k being paid out to 20,000 ecstatic Paddy Power customers today.

Paddy had already refunded €150,000 to 14,000 customers when he did the same crazy money back special on New Year’s Day, while 22,600 happy punters benefited from €235,000 given back on Saturday, January 5, around 25,000 backers were made up to receive €190,000 back on January 12 and €135k was refunded to 13,000 customers last Saturday.

Paddy Power said: “Punters who together have had over €900k refunded on losing bets this month have unsurprisingly been ecstatic about the initiative. We set out to come up with a highly generous offer for the New Year and I think that we can confidently say that we have surpassed backers’ expectations comprehensively!”

Tips from the Paddy Power Blog ‘How To Stay Standing’

Whether it be in a nuclear apocalypse situation or in a friendly contest of your footballing judgment abilities, being the Last Man Standing is hard. Sadly our only knowledge of battling zombies in atomic Armageddon is limited to Shaun of the Dead, but we may be able to shed some light on how to prosper in everybody’s favourite football survival game.

The first thing to mention regarding tactics is the free entry special, which gives you free entry to the following tournament if you are knocked out in week one. This sounds like yet more blatant self-promotion from your favourite trumpet-blowing bookmaker, but essentially this gives you the opportunity to have a bit of a punt and use one of the weaker teams you have to without a huge amount of risk.

As you’re only allowed to pick each team once over the course of a tournament it’s natural for people to go for the better teams in the earlier rounds. It’s understandable. They’re the safer bets. Why ignore them in favour of doing something as risky as saying you’re married at a Giggs family dinner?

Safe choices are fine, but what it means is when results go to form, you get large numbers of people progressing to the next round. That could happen for a few weeks and then you’re forced to start taking a few risks. Make the most of the free entry special and get one of those unreliable teams out of the way early. If they lose then you get another shot at it next week. If there a couple of big shocks in any given week, you could be quids in for taking more of a risk.

We have already paid out over €75k to winners so maybe having a quick look at how these guys did it will help you come up with your own plan of attack.

Going with the top sides early on is a standard approach, with the big five all being used within the first 10 weeks. Sprinkled amongst these in the early weeks are the Europa Leaguers, Spurs, Villa and Everton. Nothing unusual there.

Nor is there anything particularly surprising in the teams being opposed. The table below shows the combined stats from three recent winners of tournaments which began in the 2011-12 season, lasted either 14 or 15 weeks and finished last season. These were the teams those people identified as the ‘weakest links’ in particular fixtures.

• Stoke 4 
• Liverpool 3 
• Norwich 3

The tactic of siding with the big teams to win and the small teams to lose seems to be garnering the greatest success. So how do you stand out and get yourself a better chance of winning?

Before you enter a tournament you should have a good look ahead at the fixtures to see if you can spot any potential advantages. Sides like Reading, Southampton and Wigan may not be jam-packed with star names, but they won’t roll over and have their bellies tickled, especially in front of their own fans, even against some of the league’s so-called bigger sides. On the flipside however, they may struggle to pick up points on the road.

You’ll have to pick weaker teams eventually

Keeping an eye on injuries could also help. Teams who are struggling this week due to missing stars may be back to full strength in three or four weeks’ time and instead of taking a risk on them now maybe you can wait until they’re a more sure-fire bet. If you’re thinking of winning then you have to be looking at a minimum of 10 weeks ahead and more likely around the 15 week mark. This means that you’re going to have to start picking teams from the bottom half of the table eventually, so if you see an opportunity to get them out of the way early on then take it.

There’s no definitive tactical plan for this game but a little forethought, an awareness of team’s form, some clever planning and a dollop of luck could keep you on your feet long enough to take the jackpot.

After a lot of hard work and some technical jargon we don’t understand, just nod and say ‘yes’ to whenever someone talks to us about it, we’ve launched our Horse Racing Archive service and as that name suggests, it’s an archive of horse racing footage you can watch on paddypower.com.

You may have already noticed the old school ‘camera and film’ symbol appearing to the right of the horse’s name on our horse racing pages. Thankfully it’s not our way of telling you this horse has forged a successful career directing movies in Hollywood, it’s something far more useful. Click on the camera icon and you’ll be able to watch archive coverage of that horse’s most recent run. The one very minor caveat is that it’ll be the horse’s last run at one of the Racing UK tracks. That’s 30 of the race-tracks in the UK, but it’s the best 30 with the race-courses that host the vast majority of the Group and Graded level races on the flat and over the obstacles respectively.

There’s also an option to search for a horse. For example, in the image below, I’ve entered the name of Kauto Star to illustrate that point, but basically the name of most other UK-based horses will also work.

We added a coupons tab with the upgrade (see above right). It’s cleaner and easier to use with six coupons or match listings available. Right now these include: Live Match Coupon, TV Coupon, Elite European International Matches, Euro 2012 Matches Score and the ‘Score or Bore’ Coupon. On ‘Score or Bore’, customers select either ‘yes or no’ for both teams to score, or not. This has been a big priority of ours as it is a super-popular request from you guys. All the above coupons are mobile versions of current paddypower.com web/desktop coupons. We will also be adding a Whopper Coupon on iPad. High five, nerds.

3. Those coupons in a bit more detail…

Right down in the nitty-gritty of our match coupon is where Paddy Power Mobile has made the most changes. It’s got a totally new look and feel. Think of your fingers softly running through Kelly Brook’s hair on a summer’s morn while still slightly drunk from the night before. Only better. The display allows more events on screen. The time and date is displayed in case someone’s stolen your watch. It’s got Home/Draw/Away info, which is nice. There’s other stuff too but it’s time to have a play and an upgrade.

For those of you already in the know, technically referred to as the ‘cool kids’, we also have Euro 2012 team pages available.

Pick your team of choice and you can view the betting for all their group games, outright betting, top goalscorer and stage of elimination. That’s all without having to go trawling around several different pages.

England fans can go to the England team page at any stage, right up to the point where they get knocked out in the semi-finals by Germany on penalties, to see their latest prices in all markets.

Live matches on all coupons…

This is a very handy feature. In the past, when for example a Premier League match began, it would disappear off the Premier League coupon and you’d have to navigate to the Live Coupon or the Live Betting pages. That clearly wasn’t ideal so we’ve changed it. Now live matches will stay on their respective coupons and not only that, but they’ll include auto-updating odds, the latest score, the time gone in the game and they’ll even let you know when a goal has been scored.

My Matches…

This one has been around for a while, but given it a nip and a tuck. It’s now a lot more user friendly and will try to be helpful by suggesting matches from leagues based on your betting history. Of course you can add your own preferred matches and generally make life easier for yourself. Who doesn’t want that?!

Inline stats…

We’ve also had stats, or – if you’re not too lazy to read an extra five letters – statistics, on our football pages for a while, but again, we’ve jazzed them up. There’s now a stats button which displays the last six results for each in line on the page. You can also open multiple stats sections on the same page to compare recent results for multiple teams. If that hasn’t quenched your thirst for football related data, then we’ve got more detailed stats available via the rather self-explanatory ‘view all stats’ button.

Lower accordian…

Sadly, it’s not the heavenly tones of the world famous squeezebox. Again, we’re trying to make things as straightforward as we can and the lower accordion section includes links to Matches, Popular Coupons and Your Favourite Team.
