What a night! While Tottenham crashed and burned out of the Champions League, and Leicester made it five wins out of five to guarantee a spot in the next round, Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw were breaking all kinds of records at the Westfalenstadion in Germany.

Their match was an absolute humdinger finishing 8-4 (eight-four!) to Dortmund, and thus becoming the highest scoring Champions League match of all time. It was also the first ever Champions League match in which eight different players found the net and featured the fastest ever brace in Champions League history courtesy of Shinji Kagawa’s 76 second double.

And while we have to admit we didn’t see an 8-4 result coming, there were three Paddy Power punters who were incredibly optimistic, but were unbelievably wrong in the most outstanding way.

A punter from West Sussex, one from Middlesex, and another from North Yorkshire all backed the 0-0 correct score at 35/1 only to see their punt fall apart as Legia’s Aleksandar Prijovic shockingly opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Just nine minutes later Dormund were 3-0 up, and by half-time the home side had cruised into a 5-2 lead!

Unfortunately these three optimistic punters who fancied Legia to hold out for a 0-0 away to Dortmund got it wrong – but as they got it wrong in the most entertaining way imaginable, Paddy Power have given each of them a £50 free bet to ease their embarrassment. You Beauty!

After all when the inevitable pub quiz question comes up in a few years time about the highest scoring Champions League game ever, you don’t want to be the one who says you backed the 0-0.
