He’s never a man to be upstaged, but Conor McGregor hasn’t been the biggest thing on the minds of New Yorkers this week – mainly thanks to yesterday’s US election result.
However, all that should change over the next few days as the build-up goes into overdrive for his historic UFC Lightweight title contest with Eddie Alvarez in the early hours of Sunday morning.
MMA’s debut in the state of New York has been a bit overshadowed by Donald Trump’s election a US president in the last few days, but it will be the last thing on people’s minds once the cage door is locked in Madison Square Garden.
McGregor, who is fighting for the prize of being a two-weight world champion, was taking part in open workouts at the world famous arena yesterday and, of course, he was offered the chance to land a basket at the home of the New York Knicks.
Ireland’s isn’t exactly a hotbed for basketball at the moment, but McGregor-being-McGregor there’s no way he was going to pass up a chance to show off – his skills.
It was a little ropey, but the rock dropped for ‘the Notorious’ one in the end – much to the delight of the assembled media and fans. He’ll be hoping his punches land bit cleaner than his basket on Alvarez’s chin at UFC 205.
